Can a T3 barrel in 30-06 be recycled and fitted to a 700 action chambered in 308?

Thinking about another frankenrifle to make up a 308 for the grandson. Have an action and a Bansner stock here and a 30-06 bbl coming from a T3.

What is the diameter of the T3 barrel? R700 threads are nominally 1 1/16" diameter, and you need a shoulder if not using a lock nut.

While I do not have the 30-06 bbl in hand yet I do have a T3 sporter here in 223 that I can measure assuming they would be the same.

The OD of the bbl just ahead of the receiver is 1.125"

You will be shortening the barrel at the breech to rechamber from .30-06 to .308. Make sure the diameter will be large enough to generate a shoulder after the barrel is shortened. Or a barrel nut can be used.

.479" difference in case length from 30-06 to 308. Tikka tenon length is .9880"??? Something like that. So you would have to make up the difference of .509". Some barrels might be able to, depending on the taper rate and profile of the barrel. On a sporter barrel I would say no way, on a heavy barrel, you definitely could.

If your barrel does not thin out too quick, you should be able to, part of the old tenon, cut and thread a new one for the Remington, and ream your .308 chamber.

The Tikka can be turned and threaded down to about .750" and threaded 32 tpi, a snugly fitted (with Loctite) threaded large sleeve over that, then the sleeve threaded to fit the 700 action. It is a lot of work and not worth doing unless it is for yourself as a 'fun' project.

Thank you for that. Better to look for a 700 barreled action.

I have a stainless 30-06 barrel off a 700. It had a nice recessed crown added - if I recall correctly, you may have sold it to me.

I haven't fitted it to anything yet, PM me if I can help SuperCub 😉
Thanks .... I think I will pause on this project and reconsider. I need to find out what the lad likes in a rifle before buying one for him. Lots of young shooters have no interest in fudd guns. :)
