Hey everyone!

I am about to purchase my first hunting rifle, and I've decided on the Tikka T3x 308. The question I'm still struggling with is if I should get it with a muzzle break or not. I've shot 308s before with muzzle breaks before and I like the feel of less recoil, but is it worth it to get one on a T3x?

All your seasoned advice would be appreciated!

It really comes down to personal preference. Sounds like you are experienced using muzzle brakes and are aware of the positives and negatives of using them. I say go for it, it's your rifle set it up the way you want and don't look back.

Hey Luke,

The T3x, if its a Lite, is probably abotu 6.3 pounds. If you like the feel of shooting a 308 with a brake, you probaby will on a T3x as well. Unless the guns you tried were super light. You know the noise, you know what its like...

The factory brake that comes with the Roughtechs leaves a bit to be desired IMO, but it at least comes with one and comes threaded, if thats the model you're lookin at!

Stock fit and pad quality and all matter too of course but...yeah.

Exactly!

Ok thanks for all the input guys. Yes, I've really only shot with muzzle breaks so since that is what I'm use to I'll probably end up going with that.

I have a T3 lite in .30-06. In a hunting situation, you will hardly feel the recoil, because your attention is focused elsewhere…. For an extended range session, I see the benefit of a muzzle device, especially in the summer when wearing only a t-shirt. Do what is best for you, to avoid developing bad habits such as flinching…

I've been shooting since I was a kid and I shot high volume as a youngster. I have severe hearing loss and just got hearing aids this Tuesday past. Was told I needed them 12 years ago at age 43. Now I have also been a millwright for 30 years but I have no doubt most of my hearing damage is from shooting and it would be worse if I shot braked rifles. Hearing loss first showed up for me in workplace testing when I was 26.

Are you sure? Did you not share a workshop with any lathe guys?

For hunting, for me, its a no. I prefer less noise. Not worth the trade off for a light cartridge like 308. At the range, where I can wear double ear protection and fire a large number of rounds, its great. Its also noisier at the range because of the roof overhead at the firing line, so I wear both ear plugs and muffs.

I go either way, honestly I don’t find .308 is all that stout in the recoil dept so I don’t go out of my way to put a brake on a rifle. One .308 I hunt with has a flash hider and I’ve kept it because I don’t have a thread protector for it, I’ve never shot it without the flash hider so I’m not sure if it’s louder with it on. It’s an 18.5” barrel so it’s going to be louder than some to begin with, I wear ear pro regardless of if I’m hunting or target shooting.

If I were you I would shoot it a bit without one and see how you like it, you can always add one if you feel it’s needed.

Definitely, and not even worth the reduced recoil. It’s a 308 Winchester!

Ted

If reduced recoil is available on the Tikka, I'll always take it. At least theres better recoil pads out there. Heck, will take it with anything.

For a hunting rifle absolutely not. Unless you really like wearing hearing protection while hunting it's not worth it for a 308. Even if you do wear hearing protection a situation will eventually come up where you're caught off guard without it. Especially no if you hunt with anyone (guide, friend, etc). Hearing loss is more permanent than a sore shoulder. 308 shouldn't really give you a sore shoulder anyway.
