Hey folks - question first then a quick review.

Can anyone confirm whether the LHG from T97.ca is compatible with the Gen 2? Also wondering if anyone has attempted to shorten the trigger take up on the stock lower.

I got the T97 Gen 2 for Christmas and am loving it. 800 rounds through with cheap cheap american eagle 55gr FMJ and only two FTF which occurred during the first 20 rounds.

Because of tight budget constraints I topped it with a UTG 3x9-32 compact CQB with AO and red/green illuminated reticle option. I ordered it from amazon for $160 thinking that if it was crap i could just send it back but I have so far been really pleasantly surprised -- the glass is not bad (tested indoor fluorescent, and outdoor at dusk in minus 27). It comes with med rings which I had to swap out for high to get a proper cheek weld, but once the rings were mounted and lapped I dropped in the scope, levelled it, zeroed it in 6 shots and it has held zero ever since (probably helps that the gun has very little recoil). The illuminated reticle is kind of cheezy IMO but it's there if I ever feel the need to use it. It also has re-settable turrets with a positive click and the compact size is the perfect proportion on this gun (i'll follow up with pictures).

I also bought an aluminium E-Lander 10-round LAR-15 pistol magazine from TNA which fits perfects and drops out smoothly. Aside from the extra capacity I also like the 10 round mag much better than the 30-pinned-to-5 that came with it because the lower profile of the LAR doesn't interfere with my forearm when manoeuvring.

As far as accuracy, I've only had it at the range out to 50 yrds with the one type of ammo but based on that alone it shoots...acceptably. Shooting 10 rounds in fairly quick succession off of a front sandbag and eliminating the 2 furthest was consistently producing 8 round groups within 2 inches. I've ordered reloading dies for .223, a pound of TAC and some 62gr Hornady FMJBT from Budget Shooter Supply (great prices, excellent service, quick delivery) which should be arriving today. The T97 Gen 2 barrel is an 18.6" 1:7 twist so with the heavier bullet and some precision in working up a load I'm expecting the groups to tighten up considerably. I'm open to hearing opinions about powder selection and loads for this bullet/barrel combo if anyone has had good success.

One thing I do hate about this gun though is the fact that the brass gets dented on ejection when using the semi auto mode. The gun ejects the brass with such force that the spent cartridge flies about 20 feet forward so I attached a brass catcher and immediately noticed that every case was seriously dented. I switched the gas regulator to the zero setting for a while to disable the semi-auto function and manually ejected which allowed me to collect some undamaged brass for reloading. Good work-around, but kind of defeats the purpose of having a semi-auto. I watched a video in super slo-mo and could see that the case ejects out and back towards the shooter and then bounces off the back edge of the ejection port and flies forward, so I'm thinking that if i run a bead of hot glue on the outer ridge of that ejection port it will round off and cushion the blow -- and if it doesn't work i can just peel it off.

Since I'm planning on using this set up as a winter coyote gun I was hoping to do a vinyl wrap in Mossy Oak winter brush but can't seem to find anywhere in Canada to buy it (Cabela's discontinued it and ordering from Mossy Oak in the US is stupid expensive). Any thought? I'm looking for the vinyl roll not the pre-cut.

I have tried moving the charging handle over to the left side and tried 2 diff brass catcher (Caldwell that has a picatinny mount and UTG one which just wrap around the gun).
The Caldwell one is a bit too high due to the really high top rail ... working most of the time but still fail to capture and I will end up with a brass stuck in the ejection port. The UTG one was trickier since I have to wrap it reversed on the stock. The position is better than the Caldwell one but because it is mounted reversed there is an odd angle and not working very well by default. My next attempt will be adding some support on the UTG to create more space for the brass to bounce further into the catcher net. If it works I will post up a picture ;)

I get about 2-3" at 100m. It REALLY likes Aguila 62gr 5.56

Yes it does, I have not attempted to shorten up the trigger yet however.

OOCAM, thanks for the lead -- did some research about the mossy oak gun wrap and confirmed that the print shops can produce the same quality and better. Called about a dozen places to get prices on a small snow camo vinyl wrap and found the issue to be minimum order charge. Ended up finding the best deal at a print shop in Burnaby 12" x 48" of 3M premium with a matte laminate finish in a snow camo that's really close to realtree for $50 delivered. More than I wanted to pay but the min size of 1'x4' means I'll have tons left over to maybe do my binos and e-caller after the stock and scope are wrapped. Should be arriving tomorrow. Pictures to follow...

This stuff?

Best mod is to get the end of the gas selector carefully tig welded shut on the inside, (if your welder is any good the chrome on the outside is still perfect) then drill a 1/16" hole in it

Less recoil, easier to find brass, easier on the gun, and more reliable... Will still cycle fine on the low setting

First few seconds of this video show how horribly overgassed it is

The t97 bolt travels rearward a few inches more than it needs to pick up a new round... Making it completely useless in every way to be overgassed enough to bottom the bcg out

Well I don't know about the kids, but it sure seems to describe the issue of the cases being thrown with such velocity that they are dented on ejection.

2strokeforever, thanks for the mod idea. I'm REALLY hesitant to start messing with the gas system in such a permanent way, but if it solves the bent brass issue it may be worth it.

Thanks again for the good post

I was a little worried too. I dont imagine replacement parts are easy to get
I got a little piece of stainless rod the right size and if I remember correctly used a piece of welding rod thru the holes in the gas plug to hold it in the right position so he could weld it

Make sure you explain that you want the chrome on the outside undamaged
As long as the guy tig welding is good it shouldn't be a problem

More than likely the chinese used the same gas port drill bit as their 5.8 cartrige or the short barrel t97s that the rcmp seized, or both
Just because it came from the factory that way dosent mean its right
