When it comes to tac shotguns, what's the best thing to go with if I'm interested in maybe trying some competition stuff in the future? I see Mossberg 590's that look pretty good, worth picking up?

Pricewise, I see that Winchester 1300 defenders are around $400 new, while the 590's around $700. Is it worth the difference there?

Side note, what about Benelli Nova tacticals, are they even available in canada, and if so are they any good/pricing??

Imposter, check out Fabarms. They're a little more than a Win 1300 or Rem 870, but definitely worth the money IMO.

I see you're from Burnaby. Go check out Royal Sportsman on Imperial and ask for Aleks. He's a great guy to deal with and has always given me below average costs on all my guns.

Is Royal Sportsman an actual retail gun store?? I've never heard of them. Is it worth the trek in from the Fraser Valley to check out??

yes it is, its a small shop, but has lotsa stock for its size... they are a newer shop, but good guys.... you may want to call ahead to make sure they are open first... sometime they are close if the owner is out picking up ammo/guns

Yes, it is. They opened early last year and have been doing very well since. I've compared their prices to Italian, Reliable, Lever, as well as Wholesale and SIR, and have yet to find better prices. If you do, Aleks will match or beat it. And no....I don't work for them.

I bought my glock 17 from royal. it was just as cheap as anything on the net let alone vancouver.

I can't comment on the prices of other stuff though since I never looked.

I have owned an 870, a 1300, and a Mossberg 500 ATP. My personal preference was the Mossberg mainly because I was able to get the aftermarket stock and fore grip that I wanted and so I took it further than the others in customizing. I liked the way it pointed and the modified choke was a bit of an adjustment at first but later among other things it became my favorite gun for upland game. ( yes my plug was in) If you are considering competition shoots then I don't know what to recommend as the world of autoloaders brings a whole lot more to the table. There are some sweet choices right out of the box or maybe you plan on building yours up . Either way has it's merits.

I'm just debating on a 590 or 870 at the moment. I like the 870 just because of the availability of different barrels. Maybe a trip to the gunshop will help me decide after I shoulder one and see how they both feel.

Go for the Nova, I "WON" one from Abby fish and game club like 3 years ago. Great little gun, 18" bbl, ghost ring sights, 3 1/2 chamber, and believe it or not even with the short bbl and cyl. bore choke a great clay buster. Recoil is recoil, bruises heal, plus they add character.
