There appears to be many people that use the terms "tack driver" or "one hole groups" when describing their rifles accuracy.I find the terms humourous and have to laugh aloud; as how many of these people have actually driven tacks with their rifle, and do they really expect us to believe that all of their bullets pass through the same hole?Come on guys, when you describing accuracy, use real descriptions such as actual group sizes and yardages

Surprising how many rifles there are that can manage one shot one hole groups! I think that what most folks refer to as a one hole group is one in which all shots fired cut each other shot's hole - no hits separated from the group. At 100 yds a consistantly accurate rifle would have a pretty good chance of hitting a tack's head with every shot. A 6mm with a .4 group c. to c. would do it, every shot clipping a .25 tackhead. To "drive" the tack, every shot would have to overlap the shank, so the group couldn't be much over .25. Not too many rifles/shooters can do that with every shot, but often enough that it is not unreasonable.

Every rifle I own is an "INTERNET TACKDRIVER" (GRIN)!!!!!

Here are some typical groups shot with my 2 favorite hunting rifles.. not the best and not the worst. Certainly not one hole groups, and they'll shoot around tacks most of the time.... but I wouldn't want to be a "Thang" out past 500yds (grin)!

To me a single "one hole" group is not the answer anyhow.... but a CONSISTANTLY accurate rifle is what I crave... the ability to shoot a load into decent groups EVERY time.. to the same POI!

Only have these old groups handy, and am not using the BT's in the 280AI anymore... but it shoots the AB's equally as well, and likes the 140 TSX.

This little rifle is not fussy... as long as it is a Nosler bullet over H4350 she'll shoot them into decent groups every time.

Well I can say for one, that I have never tried to shoot tacks.Nor have I ever been able to shoot every bullet through the same hole.Below are three groups shot at 100 yards with my 300 ultramag one morning while developing loads. The top group is the closest that I have ever come to putting three shots through the exact same hole, and I have never duplicated it since.

In my target shooting days, it was routine, that if we blew a shot, we'd shoot the tacks, and make the target fall.
That was at 25 yards with a bull barrel target 22 with aperatures front and rear.
after my visit to the range today... Well, I need more practice. Getting old I guess.

My best group was with a factory bedded, factory triggered M-700 30-06.It was a four shot box with the fifth inside the box, this was at 100m off of sand bags.I don't use that load,I use a faster but still tight, around a inch, load.

This is a pretty typical group for me. Range was 300m with my Sako TRG 42 in .338 Lapua. No it doesn't drive tacks but it sure makes the critters nervous. My Sako TRG 21 in .308 Win probably could drive tacks IF I would consistently do my part. On good days at 100m I can shoot RAGGED one hole groups all day long; what would that make it, a .4-.5 moa gun?

This would have been about a 5/8" group if not for the flyer, but thats why this is a typical group for me; four good shots and one f**kin flyer!

Way to go!!!!!!!!!!! That's telling them....:D :D :D

It happens all to often.

Stubblejumper. To Me, a one-hole group is any group where all the shots in that group overlap enough to prevent any paper from making a bridge between any shot. Now if that happened to be five shots strung out in a line, I would not consider that a good group, but if they are in a cluster together, and consistently will do that, I am pleased. :) As For Tackdrivers, I own several. I would not hesitate to shoot at the tacks holding the target up with at least 5 rifles I own, and I believe the target would fall after the exercise!! :D However, I usually make comments that indicate what I am talking about, such as "One Ragged Hole" for a group. Anyone with more than 3 neurons with synapses to match should be able to figure out what I am talking about. ;) FWIW, I have at least a half dozen groups shot over the years where it is difficult to tell if more than one shot was fired. :) Regards, Eagleye.

To me a one hole group would be all bullets passing through a single hole so that it would be impossible to determine how many shots were fired. If all shots were merely touching,I would use that description instead of a one hole group.

I guess that would be a "ragged one hole group" ?:D

Here is a ragged one hole group out of a .223, 6 shots at 100 yards inside the size of a dime

Or should I call it something else, wouldnt want to upset anyone here. Gotta make sure we are polliticly correct these days I guess

:D

Might be these old eyes, but the only decent group I see here belongs to IVO, (oops CD just slid in with another "real " group) the others seem to have two bullets that aren't even on the paper! Three shoots together is coincidence, 5 is a group!

True one hole groups are regular and routine in top level bench rest competition, that is why they use moving backers; it is the only sure way to prove that all 5 shots went into the target!

So if the holes touch,or the paper tears to join the holes,or if the holes almost touch, the group is a one hole group.I guess by some peoples definitions, the majority of the groups that I shoot are one hole groups.Damn,I must be better than I thought I was.:D

Just to introduce yet more chaos...
The tightest group is useless from a hunting rifle unless it is at or near the point of aim; all tight groups would then do is ensure that your misses were more consistent!

Since I use holdover(or hold under) instead of adjusting my scope for each shot while hunting,I prefer that my shots strike the intended point of impact, instead of the point of aim.:D
