Hey Guys,
So I recently decided to part with my .30 caliber rifle, and my options are either sell outright or trade for something a bit more useful for me. The local ranges are a PITA to get to, and the one I tend to go to doesn't allow rifle calibers. However, they do allow .22's, so after much deliberation I've decided to hunt for a 10/22 as a replacement.
Now, I've always liked the tactical (or "tacticool", as some may say) looking rifles, and the sheer number of available parts for the 10/22 make me lean towards it. However, I do like the idea of "tactical" rifle that can break down for easy transport and storage. So, the 10/22 Takedown seems like a decent platform to build from. However, seeing as I don't have a 10/22, and I've not yet had the chance to play with one, I had a few questions... I'm hoping some of the more experienced folks could answer them, or at least point me in the right direction.
- First off, has anyone ever built a "tactical" 10/22 Takedown?
- Are the receivers interchangable with a standard 10/22 (and by extension, aftermarket receivers)?
- Do the receivers mount in the stock in the same way as the standard 10/22?
- Are there aftermarket barrels available yet?
- And, are the internal components (trigger, hammer, all that) the same as the standard 10/22 (again, for getting aftermarket parts)?
My goal is a personalized plinker... Compact, non-restricted, cheap to shoot, and fun. I'm not concerned with long-range accuracy... I don't expect to be shooting past 50 meters, if even that far. I'd like something with a folding stock, rails, and some sort of sights (red dot or low power scope), plus some other goodies (larger magazines, extended magazine release and charging handle, "Tuffer Buffers", lightened trigger pull, etc). I know the currently available stocks won't work straight out of the box, but I'm happy to modify one, assuming the receiver mounts to it the same way as a standard 10/22. That, and whether or not the internals are interchangable, are the most important aspects for me right now... If I can't modify the existing parts, or buy a decent aftermarket replacement, then there's not really much point in going this route.
The rails aren't much of a concern... I don't mind drilling and tapping the receiver for a scope mount (or using something like an Archangel Nomad stock, with a build-in top rail), and I'm sure the original forend can be modified to accept rails on the sides and/or bottom. The aftermarket barrel also isn't necessary, but it'd be nice to know my options in the event I want to upgrade/replace my barrel.
Anyway, sorry for the long post... I'm just trying to figure out if a tactical takedown is a viable option, or whether there are too many "inconsistancies" between it and the standard 10/22 to pull this off. I've done a bit of searching online, but haven't really found any decent info on it yet.
