Hey, looking for advise here. If there is already a thread discussing this is depth, please let me know.

I have a Winchester 1200 defender that I bought primarily as a conversation piece ("What the F*** are you doing in my house A**HOLE?!" kind of conversation)

It shoots kind of high with shot shells and rediculously high and left with slugs. I was thinking of adding some type of reflex or red-dot sight so I can adjust my point of aim end center things up a bit better.

I believe I will have to drill and tap the reciever to make anything work, that's no problem.

Any advise on what I can use that will let me adjust my zero and still work well in the home defence role? Thanks

Just to make sure, have you tried different shotshells/slugs? Maybe your gun just doesn't like what you've been using. A shotgun that isn't shooting straight wouldn't be my first choice for home defense.

No, I haven't really played to much with it. Shot shell pattern are consistently high but reasonably centered for windage. I have an ATI collapsible stock that causes my cheek weld to be high. I have a drop spacer on order (forever due to a now removed shipping agent at ATI). That should help elevation some. However I just thought something with windage and elevation adjustment wound give me more flexibility when it comes to slugs and more general target/tactical/fun shooting. I could say find a slug load that really shoot well but not to POA. I could then zero a reflex or red dot sight to adjust this.

Any thoughts on the idea ? Am I right out to lunch?

Cool, I had never seen one for a 1200 before I was not sure how the would attach with just the one pin through the reciever. I see this mount has a cross brace underneath that must ride against the bottom of the reciever to keep it in place.

I will take a look around for one of those at my local smith or on-line.

Any thoughts out there on on a reasonable reflex type sight for this application? Should I be looking at a tube style red dot instead? I am thinking a reflex might mount higher than a tube but would give a wider field of view / less obstruction to peripheral l vision?

I would never rely on a red dot site for anything other than hunting or competition (and I own several)

If I were you...I'd get a nice set of Ghost Ring sites...

The Shooting Edge (site sponsor) sells LPA sights. I have a set on my 590 and I love them.

Thanks much for your advise and input. It has given me much to consider and I realise that I best not rush into buying to much too soon.

Of course what I really want is a dirt cheap sight that will hold zero no matter what kind of abuse I put it throught, will always function perfectly and will let me us this gun for competition, home defence and the odd round of clay bird shooting.:dancingbanana:

I other words I want the impossible:D

I have never had the batteries run out on a set of irons on my other firearms so there is that reliability factor to consider. Perhaps I am liking the reflex red dot sight idea because of the cool factor and ignoring function.

I checked The Shooting Edge web site and could not find the LPA sights, however it seems that their sight is sort of under development. I googled LPA directly and I like what I see.

What does a set cost in round numbers up here in the Great White North?

They have a thread on here anouncing that they now have LPA sites in stock. I have no idea what the cost is.

I brought a set in from the US last year...so there were additionals costs...

For a dot...I have a Docter mounted on t he slide of my IPSC Open gun (one that was rebuilt by Beven Graham...and another one (with no mods) mounted as a backup on my AR.

They're pretty tough...but not cheap

Talk to Casey at TacOrd and get the Trijicon/Wilson ghost rings. perfect solution for your needs.

Durable, tritium, adjustable, low profile, foolproof.

I have one of those no gunsmithing mounts for a similar gun. The rear is a through pin, but in front they are little cones. Turn them too tight and the mount flexes out to the sides. If you don't really care about the holes, I suggest drill and tap the aluminum reciever for a more solid hold.
