i have a glock 21, XCR-M, keltech KSG, Hatsan semi auto tactical shotgun that would like to buy sights for.
Specifically for low light or no light close quarters situations but also may have up to 100 yard capabilities since the shotguns could almost penetrate 3/8 plywood at 100 yrds...maybe not deadly but still gonna hurt!

So far i have a barska flashlight laser pointer combo that i imagine is only good for close quarters.

Am i rght in thinking the best optics like trijicon scope or aimpoint sight doesnt help unless u can positively identify your target in the pitch black of night if need be?

would the Atn night vision goggle be economically worthwhile getting to use with laser pointers like this barska unit on these various weapons i have?

For all things Night Vision in Canada, Scout Base Camp is the go-to company.

It sounds like you should either pursue Gen 3 NV and IR illuminators and IR Lasers, or invest in some quality white lights and combat sights. Say something like a Surefire 600u 500lmn light with an aimpoint or eotech or ACOG or Elcan.

Be warned. The NV game is not cheap unless you are buying crap you will quickly realize is not of very good quality.

im unsure if i should shell out for a good monocle/binocular setup that mounts to a helmet or harness or get an aimpoint/eotech/trijicon for one or more of the guns i wanna use in dark?

am i going to need both a nite vision goggle and aimpoint/eotech optic or wil the monocle work with any cheap laser pointer for close quarters..... just target by seeing your laser on the intended target with the goggle[monocle]?

and if i want accurate shooting to 100 yds then will i need the goggle setup AND a good optic?

Yeah, it sounds like you're being pulled in a bunch of different directions here OP.

Want something to eliminate predators out @ 100 yards in the dark? Get a fixed 4x gen 1 night vision optic and an IR illuminator for your XCR-M

Want to defend the house from baddies with masks and meth habits? Get a surefire light and an eotech for your hatsan

Want to call in close air support while operating in a hostile non-permissive environment on secret black ops into bad-assistan? Get a helmet mounted PVS-14, put IR lasers on all your guns, and carry them all at the same time.

Yeah, it sounds like you're being pulled in a bunch of different directions here OP. Ha ha YA YOU ARE RIGHT...TOO MANY DIRECTIONS.

Want something to eliminate predators out @ 100 yards in the dark? Get a fixed 4x gen 1 night vision optic and an IR illuminator for your XCR-M THIS SOUNDS LIKE AN ECONOMICAL OPTION THAT WILL PROBLY TAKE SOME EXPERIMENTATION. would that cabelas crap atn cougar fall into this category...gen 1 nite vision?

Want to defend the house from baddies with masks and meth habits? Get a surefire light and an eotech for your hatsan WHAT WILL A $1000 EOTECH do here under ten yards that a vortex strikeforce II wont do at a 1/4 the price??

Want to call in close air support while operating in a hostile non-permissive environment on secret black ops into bad-assistan? Get a helmet mounted PVS-14, put IR lasers on all your guns, and carry them all at the same time.
LOL, this would be nice but i dont have friends in militarty places

Okay,

1. No, don't buy cougars. Gen 1 goggles don't have the clarity to let you move around in the dark. Even with two tubes for depth perception. You use a Gen 1 optic with an illuminator from a static position to pick out targets that would otherwise be invisible to you. Something like this would work: https://www.armasight.com/night-vision/night-vision-weapon-sights/armasight-orion-3x-gen-1

2. You don't need to spend $1000 on an Eotech. I got mine for $300. There's nothing wrong with a strikeforce until the battery dies, or the electronics fry because you left the gun leaning against the furnace, or you fumble to turn it on when you need it. I just named eotech because they're a shotgunny kind of optic. If we're talking real serious home defense ... buy the budget aimpoint, never turn it off.

3. I'm putting together a "300 versus 3000" video right now that compares budget and milspec i2 and thermal night vision. Apparently I need to make it a higher priority. Here's a day/night gearshot

Okay, you may not have the 10's of thousands of dollars in NV gear, but you have a well developed knowledge between your past work and doing your journalism with things like your embedded exercises with the British Army.

Your understanding is definatly a far more developed then 99% of any one who who has even considered Night vision for personal use!

ok excellent response

amazon.ca has that gen 1 nitescope for 500 bucks cdn, very affordable, is that the best deal i should expect on that scope?

do you have a link for an eotech budget model?
i think the cheapest i found was 800 and it wasnt nitevision i think, looked at so many different models and 3 or more makes...

cant wait for the video, let us know when you have it finished
thanks in advance

Dont even waste your money on Gen 1 you will not be happy with the performance and would be better off spending that money on white light solutions. Here is an idea about the differences in NV gens:

night-vision-generation-comparison1.jpg

If there were two people standing by that house, one was your daughter and the second a rapist. Which gens would you feel comfortable with you ability to identify the target with and take a shot, with you only knowing your daughter was at the house and not which person she was?

As for a budget RDS look at the aimpoint patrol

No such thing as gen-4 per say it was just a marketing term there is film-less gen3 though. If you are getting a RDS and sooner than later would like to get into the world of NV make sure it has a nv mode or you will burn your tube.

That picture also isn't a true representation of a quality gen 2+ photonis NV setup, depending on your budget Gen 2+ will be more than adequate for more than 75% of users. Only huge advantage of gen 3 over a quality gen 2+ is going to be when you get into really dark areas and want to go passive.

Kolumbo took the words right out of my mouth.

But that now-ancient graphic is a starting point!

You can use a Gen 1 successfully, but not in the same ways you would use a Gen 3 autogated tube.

From a predator perspective: a properly magnified Gen 1 or Gen 2 riflesight with IR illumination can be all you need to shoot from a prepared position at coyotes you couldn't normally see.

From an army-man/survivalist perspective: a Gen 1 monocular gives you basic access to the IR spectrum. That's an advantage if your working with other people who are using IR light to mark themselves, locations, targets etc. But if your expecting to take a stroll with a Gen 1 goggle you're going to end up squinting at a lot of dark patches asking "whats that?" and probably falling flat on your ass.
