Ok, as another poster so nicely stated, this semi-auto thing is indeed trouble. I've already got a 10/22 build that's gone out of control and a wife asking too many questions. Now I want to embark on something completely different and would like some input before I start spending and acquiring. It's not about "why", but rather "can it be done" and if so, "how much trouble will it be".

Compared to a 10/22, a Cooey 64 is cheap and plentiful (half the cost and guys are actually selling their Cooeys!). I want to take a 64 (or equivalent) and go from practical to tactical. Stock refinish, addition of a UTG/Leapers quadrail (the one for the 10/22), optics, bipod, etc. Essentially, this is sort of the look I'm going for:

Some questions:

1. Can I rebarrel a 64 and if so, can I source a compatible replacement 16" (give or take) bull barrel?

2. If a barrel replacement is simply not practical, I can only cut the existing barrel to 18.5"; is this correct? Does the barrel OAL also include a flash hider if installed or does the measurement end at the end of the threading (assuming I had the barrel cut and threaded by a smith)?

3. Is the UTG/Leapers quad rail compatible with a Cooey 64 stock (minor modifications I can do to either the stock or rail; a major overhaul of either is a no go).

4. Am I nuts?:D

the 64 barrel is very easy to take off, just one screw but the screw holds more than just the barrel.
do yo have a 64 to get the specs from?
it can be a bit tricky

Contact savage, I thought I seen a 64 bull barrel on a parts list

18.5" is the lowest you can go if your hacking the barrel. Does not include a flash hider.

You'd have to drill and tap the rifle wouldn't you? I'm not exactly sure how it keeps from falling off. Some meat may need to be added or taken off the stock to allow a tight fit.

4. Am I nuts?:D
I don't see much of a point to it. It's your money though, so what I think doesn't matter.
yep

DOOOD! I urge you to go lay down and think about girls until the feeling goes away.... :D

Where'd you get that picture? It just looks plain WRONG! All back and knobby front end with a traditional wood stock? I sense a disturbance in the Force..... and it's not pretty.

There's some sanity in making a more compact carbine style but to go all Frankengun with rails that'll never be used and serve no real purpose other than as a really uncomfortable place to put your hands just doesn't make much sense to me.

Now if you were looking at a laminated "plasti-wood" grey-black laminated veneer stock with a full on pistol grip molded in and a foregrip on a 19'ish inch barrel and short "shoulders down and in" style room clearing carbine look that may well be a different story. But in that case you'd still only need a short rail on top for a red dot (close in remember?) and maybe two short mount points up front for a flashlight and maybe a laser spot.

Or... there was one tac rifle that seemed to make some sense. It had a 4x shortie scope up on the center mount for reaching out along with a small red dot on a 45 angled rail at the base of the scope. The idea was that for close in the pistol grips were just rotated to the side a little to view through the red dot. But for longer range stuff you still have a scope.

And with the low kick of the .22 the shoulder stock could be really short so it sits in super tight to the shoulder. Just keep the pistol grip close to 90 degrees to suit the closer in position of the trigger hand. You may even want it to be set for a small amount of forward sweep to suit this.

Oh great, now you've got ME thinking too!.... :D

:D

That's why I said "kind of" the look I'm going for. Wood plus cheap rail system looks all wrong, I agree. My 'motivation' for this project comes from seeing this picture, and the rifle on top:

It's a 10/22 with some mods to the action, stock painted black with the Leapers/UTG rail system installed. It's simple and understated and pretty much exactly what I'm trying to do (plus adding a bipod), albeit with a Cooey or Savage 64. For the price of one 10/22, I can buy 2 64s.

Doing some surfing, I've found that Savage makes a lovely 20" bull barrel for their new BTV rifles, made up here in Canada. What do you think the chances are that Savage would only sell me a barrel? ;) I plan to buy a Leapers qual rail anyway, so I might find someone locally who has a 64 to see how it will mate, before spending another 100 bucks on the rifle.

If only you could buy a 10/22 action up here, I'd be set. Like I also said, it's not about 'why', it's about 'can I'. I guess if money were no object, I could do anything. But saving dough is what this project is all about, so perhaps it's already doomed!:D

Editted to add: I'll still lay down for a while and think about girls! Can't say no to that tip! :D

j-man, I don't see much tacticoolness in your picture. No, you are not nuts. I butchered one of my 64's not long ago and furnished it with bushed barrel and catelivered scope mount. My nextspet was going to be machining custom aluminum stock to further furnish it with AR jewelry.

you cannot get bull barrel for it but its easily machined from blank and chamber reamer for 22lr are only 10$.

You can chop it as short as you want as long as overall length with stock on reains over 29" somewhere (can't rememebr exact figure)

Tactical isn't exactly the word to best decribe what I had in mind but it's the one I used for lack of a better term. I think my plan to jazz up a 64 is coming to an abrupt end. There are simply too few options, without some major gunsmithing, to make it into what I want. I can't cut the barrel to shorter than 18" without making it prohib and I'm not crazy about shelling out a lot of cash for a newly manufactured shortened barrel which would be legal (talk about a stupid law: homemade <18" barrel is illegal, but a manufactured <18" barrel is legal ). Meanwhile, as I've found with the current build, there are tons of after market 10/22 mods out there that will get me the desired look and function, and then some.

Ah well.....back to the EE to find a bargain basement 10/22!:)

your wife is gonna shoot you if you buy another 10/22. another option for some rails would be to get a few lenghts of picatinny rail, and inlet the stock for them on three sides or whatever and have one taped into the top of the barrel. be alot cheaper than buying a quad rail.

cooey's make good survivall gun projects, tacticool not so much.

64s can be jam-o-matics. I didn't want to give mine to my wife (I was more than willing to dump that old beater and put the money towards something more reliable for her) but she made me an offer I couldn't refuse, so now it's her headache.

We once had a great post about a Tacticool Cooey 64, "done-up" in camo, some type of scope, pistol-grip, etc....;)...last time I checked, it was floating around the "E & E"...:yingyang:

You're absolutely insane and, what's worse, so am I! I just picked up a nice 64b and I'm thinking of making it look like a miniature semi-auto 50 bmg or something like that. (Without any permanent modification to the original stock or the irons.) I'll post pics whenever it's done.

My Savage 64 w bull barrel.

It's got a bit if finger print rust.:(
There has got to be enough 64 owners to justify custom parts.
Hi caps would be a good place to start.

Heh, who cares if it is insane, have fun and take pics!! I am hoping to do up my Cooey 60 with a bipod and some tacticool paint for a 'gopher sniper' look one of these winters lol. I really should leave the poor beast well enough alone for how good it shoots, but I'm a sucker for tinkering.
