tactical rifle shoots

I'm a newbie in the rifle scene:
What do you guys prefer to use at a tactical rifle shoot (from the AR family)

As far as bbl length, a 20"? 16.5? Shorter?
I'm wanting to get an AR for targets and for entering some tac rifle shoots.

Is there a reason to prefer an M4 size over the full size? Seems to be the M4 would easier to swing around, but does that hold true in actual use?
Is there some drawback that would make me want to stay with the full size?

I'm guessing the longer barrel obviously should shoot better, but how much?
Thanks.

Johann, if you are in the Vancouver area, any AR type rifle accurate to 100 yards will be fine. The range we use for matches is limited to 100 yards max., so you will suffer no major handicap in using a SBR. IMO, an M4 type will be slightly handier than a full length rifle, but its not really a significant advantage.

It seems to me that the most important thing to be cautious about is not to load up ones rifle with a ton of gadgets ... I shudder at the weight/handling of guns that have been 'tactically gizmoized'. :p

I'll shoot either a stock AR or my Beretta Storm. I particularly appreciate the Storm's rail system but keep the 'gizmos' down to an EOTech, and add a light only for night matches.

I will admit that the 'gizmoized' guns have the LCF in spades though. :D

Matches at other ranges may require longer range shots, so a longer barrel may be more significant in that case, not to mention an optic with magnification as opposed to the EOTech.

awesome, thanks guys. I do intend to keep my AR relatively stock, I'm in the 'old school' train of thought.

Or maybe its just that I'd be even more embarrassed by my poor shooting if I have an AR with more weight in accessories than rifle :) This way I can always blame the iron sights...

So it looks like the consensus is an M4 with 16" bbl. Thanks guys.
See you out at the range...

maybe you shouldn't ;)

I am not telling you to decked out your gun for show. But optics such as aimpoint, Eotech and ACOG enhance the pointing and target acquisition ability of the shooter by keeping both eyes open. It also takes away the need to "line up" your iron sights. Vertical fore-grip is also a good idea.

If you can only afford one AR (like most of us peasants) go with a 16" barrel.
I initially thought I'd stay 'traditional' with a standard A2 setup for Tac Rifle, but once I saw all the snotty-nosed kids with their decked-out M4-geries and Oakley's I realized it was the ONLY way to go. :D

Thanks for all the responses so far.

I've done some searches here, and Stag and Dlask seem to be well regarded choices. And Dlask is local to me, except after taxes and all, Dlask is going to be $400 more than Stag (through Armseast).

Getting an RRA would entail importing which means additional time and money, so I'd probably go with one of the other two first.

Am I getting $400 more of carbine with Dlask over Stag? That difference would pay for a lot of ammo, for instance...

probalby not $400 more, mind you though i'm not sure if you've included shipping in the price difference....

also around xmas time Dlask was having a sale on its carbines (hand guard rails included)....

the main diff i think is maybe Dlask can get you a barrel less than 16" as none of the new ARs from the states seem to come /w barrels less than 16" right now (other posts have indicate this MAY change though)

It doesn't matter if you live on Dlask's doorstep or the other side of the world...the service will be the same. ;)

Probably not...I guess it depends upon what "extras" you get. Compare the two rifles feature for feature before deciding.

Are you only going to be shooting tac rifle with us?Or will you be shooting service too?I use a 20 incher for both and seem to do quite well.Never had a problem with the gun being too long. The LCF is big with the tac shooters. The trickier the better...;)
A couple of the shooters do VERY well with the SKS and I'm sure once we start up again Tac Rifle will be inundated with VZ-58's.Both much cheaper than an AR and for the short distances they work well.

Will a 16" bbl work for service rifle shoots? I'm afraid I don't know all the rules yet, but I'm looking forward to learning.

From what I have read, the Stag Arms has a milspec buffer tube and m16 bolt carrier. Milspec tube means you can swap a Vltor, LMT or Colt stock on without adding the tube. The m16 bolt carrier adds mass to the bolt group and helps with the cycling in the shorter barrels.
