i am planning on participating in a tactical/service rifle match course and unfortunately i only have a 16"barrel AR and I require a scope.

The Service Rifle must be equipped with a sight that is capable of making elevation and windage adjustments. Ideally, these are not just zeroing adjustments but adjustments to set the required elevation for the range and to make continuous wind adjustments throughout a match. A variable with a maximum power of 10 is recommended. Does anyone have any suggestions without breaking the bank. this is new to me so ideally i do not want to spend a fortune.

Also, would it be worth saving for an 18" or 20" upper?

people have shot well with all kinds of optics on top of their rifles for service rifle ...some have even shot very well with irons haha.

alot of people run elcans/acogs, you can find used ones for under $1000 depending on model

another scope thats very popular is the bushnell 3200 tactical, its a fixed 10x with mildot reticle and target turrets, these are around $300 usually, works great, good glass and quality for the price

.223, 1.5 minutes from 100 to 200m (5 clicks on a 1/4 min scope) 11 more clicks to 300m
might be a bit different with that little short barrel but should be pretty close.
We only allow a max of 4 power for our service rifle matches and no limit for sniper, they are letting you off easy.

Lots of power isn't always best!!

When it becomes available again, the Falcon Menace 1.5-5x30SIR would be just the ticket for SR. Allen Gun Works, a sponsor here, is the Canadian distributor. Check on the header above for a link. These are affordable good quality scopes, you won't go wrong :) Get a one-piece 30mm Armalite mount/ring assembly or your favourite 30mm set of rings/mount and you're good to go. Tip: when mounting a cope on an AR, make sure the rear of the ocular (back-end) doesn't sit any farther back than the charge handle and preferably a bit further forward. That's where the Armalite works really well since it provides an offset so your don't have to resort to a rail extender. Good luck and welcome to the addiction :dancingbanana:

I plan to use a 3X ACOG when I try out service rifle this spring. Just going to use 62 gr. ammo like it's calibrated for and then use the BDC reticle.

Presently I have a Leupold 1.5-5. I've never shot out to 500yards with it and Im wondering if this scope will do. The website states that these scopes can shoot out to 800 yards but it doesnt specify which ones of the MR/T will do that easily.

I've shot out to 700 with this scope on my 17.9 inch Classic Green Carbine. It was tricky at that range but I was able to get consistent hits on the gong with that combo and 62 grain american eagle. The excellent spotter helped too though.

Like Rifledude said: CyberK (sponsoring dealer on CGN) sells the Falcon 1.5 x 5 x 30 (even has a red and green dot). I bought one for around $ 300ish landed. I'll be ready for anything at 500m this coming summer!

Large knobs allow you to adjust for windage and elevation , just don't lose them, better yet, I make it a habit to leave my turret knobs at home or zip-loc'ed in the gun case. Never lose them on the firing line when confusion will reign.

Get what works for you and yer budget.

The service rifle targets are so big 18"X19" - 1.5-5.5 is more than enough. People shoot these matches with Elcan at 3.4X.

Could I use this set-up for a Service Rifle Match?
TA01NSN: 4x32 Trijicon ACOG, also 16" Stag 1/9 .223 upper with a Geissele DMR Rifle Trigger or a Rock River Service Rifle Trigger?
