I was thinking of purchasing a left handed cross draw tactical vest to keep all my gear ( mags, paperwork, pistol, etc ) on me while at the range.

I'm not ex-military, police, etc.

I'm new to guns and new to this club.

Bad idea? Would I look like a poser?

Its a bad idea. Only because with that set up, your gun isnt pointing downrange. Basically to draw youre poiting your gun at the guy in the left lane. Id get it if you want the gear, But in terms of using it at the range I wouldnt. Just use a normal holdster.

It can be drawn from with out flagging if done proberly. But you need to practice it and do it the same every time.

That being said I would also recommend a strong side holster of some sort.

Crossdraw holsters and vests are not allowed at most range I know except for police and military... Same thing with IPSC I believe... Because of the danger to others when drawing... Also, you might look strange to others!! Wathever you do, don't wear a katana with hard plates duct-taped to your back!!

Personally, I think the poser factor depends on what kind of shooting you're doing. If you're running a fire and movement drill, for example, it makes perfect sense to wear a chest rig. I wouldn't wear it, however, while doing something like benchrest. Your rig is a tool to accomplish a task. I'm not a professional carpenter, but when I do renovations or build something I wear a tool belt. Does that make me a poser?

As for the cross-draw, the previous replies line up with what I've seen. Depends on where you shoot and what you're doing. Regardless, the overriding concern is always going to be Safety. Even if your cross-draw rig is allowed, I'll tell you right now that people will NOT be impressed if you start sweeping them on the draw.

If it's a left-handed cross-draw, wouldn't his gun be pointed to the right? :p

A solid molle belt set up should suit your purposes. You can put a holster, spare mags pouch as a basic set up and if you want to add rifle mag pouches you still have room... Next thing you know you're doing 3 gun comps.

To answer your question about posing. Its not posing as long as it has a purpose as mentioned above. The only people I consider posers on the range are the guys that are obviously trying to make everyone look at how 'cool' they are in their kit.

If you're brand new to shooting sports you probably don't need to bust out that gear right away. I'm new as well, walk before you run and just learn s**t as you go. A badass x-draw vest isn't needed to learn the basics IMO! :)
