hey people!
As some of you already know, I have been accepted to the wildlife protection course ( conservation officer ), and today a letter came with directions to the equipment needed for the class, among which is an obligatory deer hunt. I am not a hunter and do not want to drop the deer but would like to have with me a very good looking rifle, no need for it to be able to make a clean kill just be over .243(6mm) to be in accordance with the law. I already own a SKS but feel like I could have something nicer. Looking at the CX4 Storm(18.5'' barrel so non-restricted) but I am open to any suggestion.

To Rephrase : I want a nice millitary/swat looking rifle to make classmates drool, this rifle will not kill any deer at any time, but it need to have a bore over 6mm so I can pack it along and be in law.

I hope that's a joke.

Actually, as stated, I am not in any way looking at it to be a dedicated deer rifle, just a rifle that has a bore over 6mm so i can "hunt" with it. I will not fire during this trip unless my life is severely threatned. I am not a real hunter, I shoot for my life or predators around the house ; only animals which are a danger to me or to my pets : a deer 500km away form my house is not in anyway nuisible te me, so no shoot.

I would rephrase your first post then before you occur the wrath of some of the faithful here. What you said in your first post doesn't read very well. Ps you could always get an M-14 ;)

Opps my bad Hungry  I forgot your first M14 lesson "don't buy one buy two":D

NO ! Don't get ONE M14 !! :)

Get TWO of them !!

Turn one into a legal >18" SOPMOD critter gitter for a truck gun. That'll learn all those rotten poachers

Leave one factory condition so that you can watch "Full Metal Jacket" or "Blackhawk Down" movies on your days off.

Cheers,
Barney

An SKS might seem like a wimpy deer rifle, but there are plenty of dead deer that speak to the capability of the 7.62x39 round. The numbers suggest this cartridge is comparable to the venerable .30-30, and it can be loaded with pointier bullets.

In Quebec the deer hunts are fast and close range. Many hunters have a special fondness for semi automatics and lever actions. I have hunted with an SKS, and would do it again, but after knowing what it takes to knock down a deer for certain, it is in the second rank of deer cartridges for me.

ok, where is the matter ? is it the CX4 idea? or my flag of Quebec avatar? or do you just hate COs??? the rifle have nothing to do with deer just need to launch a bullet 6mm or larger and look mean !! where is the problem???

p.s. thanks for all constructive posts, just targeting posts with no meaning

None of the above. It's just most people would probably not take a CX 4 hunting. It is a cool looking gun just not really a deer caliber. Your first post came off kinda like you weren't looking to make a clean kill or drop the deer. I thought you only wanted to wound the deer. I am guessing it was just a little off in your translation. If you don't intend to shoot at a deer that is fine but thats not what came out. You did clear it up in your second post. The internet can be bad for having meanings warped the way you don't want them to be. And it is definately not the Quebec or the CO thing.

You're just getting grief from the deer hunters on the board, if you <were> to consider using a 9mm handgun cartridge as a deer slayer, you might as well throw a big friggin' rock at the thing. The energy just isn't there with 9mm.

Seriously, if you want to be a CO take a proper hunting rifle with you. Nothing says "don't take me seriously" like showing up with the wrong equipment.

If you're hung up on being "cool", take a Garand or an SVT.

If you have no interest in hunting, I'd have to wonder about your chosen career path.

You want to be a conservation officer... but you don't want to hunt? What's the deal, you like wearing green and tan?

My advice: drop $350 on a used lever in .30/30, and give hunting a try. I bet you'll be hooked.

Llungman ag-42b - neat gun, neat calibre, semi auto, not tacticool just regular cool

CZ858 - looks neat, can drop a deer, cheap plinking ammo, softpoints are available

Norc M14s - Probably the best value, more than enough for deer, semi-auto, lots of crap available

M1 Garand or an SVT-40 would be cool choices as well but a bit pricier (for the the garand anyway AFAIK)

Roffle @ CX4

Cz-858 with the aftermarket wood stock, the DLASK SMD 870 shotgun, any other tactical shotgun, Yugo SKS M55/66 (I love the grenade launcher:D )

But if a was you, I would use a real hunting rifle.

(Question de ne pas passer pour LE ti-coune du cours!)
