Tactics for Shooting a Monster Black Bear

If you want to shoot a large animal don't shoot the small ones. Seriously too many people looking for "trophy " animals break down and shoot the first legal critter that shows up.

How true..
Self-control, focus on your goal..

If you read that long winded diatribe that I posted above, you would see that, in a baiting scenario, the way to shoot a big bear is to create competition on the bait. Set out a series of strike baits, narrow down to 2-4 of the more active baits and then bait daily with large quantities of quality food stuffs... once many local bears start using the location scale back the volume of bait over a few days in preparation for hunting the location... the bears will begin to compete with each other for the food and will start coming in earlier to beat the others to the supply... that is your opportunity to connect with a big boar.

Go to Alberta, lol seriously, lived there my whole life and recently moved to Ontario, I laugh every time someone claims "monster" out here and it's barely 250lbs. I know it's not a lot of help but I truely believe Ontario is not the place to find a monster bear if your that's all you seek.

I have personally seen some really big bears here in Ontario (never with a rifle or tag in hand). Was right 10' away from one at a mining dump way up north, it sneaked up on me. I took a good look at it and said "ya, I could fit in that things belly" and ran in the truck. And I'm not exactly small. There may be fewer of them but they are here.

The bigger bears come to bait sites last. Usually the small ones come in and if you are patient the big ones come at last lite or just after legal shooting time. One day that big one will come in just at legal shooting time. That's how they react in Quebec anyway
