Friggin powders.......

Why are there so many???

Name a good powder that will cover several rifle rounds ...

Say...792 kurtz
792 mauser
.303 brit
.308/762 nato
7.62x54r

you will notice these are all military calibres.....

H4895 or IMR4895

Most versitile powder made according to Hodgdon.

Works well in reduced loads all the way up to full power loads in standard cartridges, I don't reccomend it for magnums though.

Titegroup or Clays when you finally discover handguns :)

Edited to say I use Winchester W231 with a 223 rife (AR type), but I'm experimenting with bullets rather than powder. Versatile but never tried it with higher calibers. I think Winchester powders and primers tend to outperform their bullets.

Varget, IMR4064 or IMR4895 for the 8mm, .303, 7.62 x 54 and .308.
This may help for the Kurtz. No w's.

that's like asking a woman to buy one pair of shoes...! Not going to happen...:dancingbanana:

Looking at several older and newer manuals. I can't help but notice the older and newer manuals focus allot on 4064 now the newer focus seems to be on Varget. Just an observation not a recommendation. I have used both and like both.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I read in an article somewhere that varget isn't too good for semi auto .308's. I believe the article was on reloading for the M1A. With the military calibers Klunk listed I thought I might throw that out there.

I've used IMR 4895, 4064, and 3031 for my 308 and 303 with good results,

I use 4064 for three of the calibers on your list Klunk with good results. The only thing I like about Varget more than 4064 is that it is less temperature sensitive. It is quite a bit $ than 4064 though.

Never tried 4895.

Why so many?

.
There is no "ONE SIZE FITS ALL".

To get adequate results in all these calibres, I would have to go with 4895 or 4064, leaning toward 4895 if I had only ONE POWDER to choose from.

However, to get the BEST results from each rifle, I want to have a more adequate selection of powders available. We have three different .223s that perform best with three different powders and bullets.

If we were limited to ONE, we would all be eating Macdonald's hamburgers, driving Ford cars, and, worst of all, would only be allowed to drink ONE bottle of beer. However, one wife seems to be adequate for most of us.
.

Four of those cartridges have similar ballistics and powder capacities, and will work very well with a wide range of powders from 3031 to 4064 and slower.

The Kurz round is very different, with a small capacity and wacky case to bore capacity ratio. It requires a much faster powder, something that is almost a handgun or shotshell powder.

For all those except the Kurz - I'd try Varget, W748 or BLC-2 (I like the way they meter - no screwing around with the powder trickler).
What powder works well in the M43 (7.62x39) is where I'd start in the Kurz.....
