Take down shotguns?

I am a new license holder and have never owned a shotgun.

I am looking for a 12 or 20 gauge to go rabbit hunting with that i can take down or fold so that i can fit it in a backpack or small case.

The reason for this is that i will be riding my motorcycle to my hunting destination and i want it out of sight/view for if i stop for gas or food.

i was wonedring if all hinge shotguns come apart (barrel and stock) or if there are any pump or semi's that can have the barrel removed easily for this purpose? (5-10 minutes would be an acceptable timeframe as i do not intend to hunt from my bike :) )

ive got a marine magnum 870 , with an 18.5 inch barrell and top folding stock it fits in my backpack.
 
I'd go with a short barreled double because the Semi's and pumps don't have a removeable magazine tube. So they are still about 34" long even with the barrel remove.

A nice little coach gun like the Stoeger would break down to only 20" and if you found a Stoeger with chokes then you could get some pretty long shots done with it.

I just picked up a nice 24" 20gauge barreled Stoeger Uplander. that would take down a little longer but still a lot shorter than a pump or semi. The Stoeger Condor Outback 20" O/U would be a good choice too.
 
To each their own, but I always just strapped my shotgun to my pack.

A side by side or superposed would be the way to go if you needed to be able to tuck it away.

I would wager that an outlaw, taken down, would fit into many common bags or hard storage. The barrels on any longer gun would be the longest part.

Unless you get a pump gun. The the receiver/stock end of the group will be the hardest to pack away.

Not quite. My Mossberg 500 has a removable magazine tube. It's quick and easy to remove.

I would look into Savage 24's. Don't know the exact length, but they fit the rabbit hunting scenario well and break down. The Mossberg with an 18.5" barrel with a full choke would be nice as well. There's not much a 12g can't do.

I've been trying to find a good backpacking shotgun just how you've described. Any idea on what a guy would be looking at cost-wise?

I'm going to have to do more research on the folding stock. I know barrell length affects whether it's restricted or not, but just wondering about the stock? I'd rather have folding because I think I'd be useless with a pistol grip.

Now that i know most shotguns can be taken down at least a little bit i think the best thing for me to do is visit a gun shop and find the best fit for the task.

I'll make sure i bring my measuring tape with me ;).

The Win Model 12 came in a takedown version, where the barrel and magazine tube came off as a unit. It would be an excellent choice for an upland gun, as you wouldn't have to worry about trying to shoot 3" steel with it.

i bought a marine mag which is pretty costly right now about 800 bucks. ATI top folders are pretty cheap I think, and you can attach ghost sights and shotshell holders on them. i beleivce as long as the gun is 26 inches folded youre alright.
