was just watching Dirty Harry (1971) (yeah yeah i know its a movie :) ).
the sniper, Scorpio, uses a takedown .30-06 sniper rifle.
i was wondering if this was a totally custom gun, just a movie prop, or if something like this actually exists:
a bolt action rifle with a removable barrel. ie: with one where the bolt head cams/locks into the barrel itself, like on a shotgun.

i took these screencaps from the movie to show you what i mean:

That was a custom rifle made up using a Japanese takedown paratrooper rifle as the starting point.

I think that rifle has appeared in a number of movies.
Doubt if it is the only such conversion around - there aren't too many bolt actions designed for takedown.
An unaltered paratroopers rifle would likely be worth somewhat more though. They are not particualrly common. I think that one is the second type, the first version used an interrupted thread system, not the wedge lock shown.

so basically unless you want to spend 4-5gs youre looking at (preferably a purpose-built takedown) Lever or hinge action?
something like a Browning BLR Lightweight takedown for $830 or H&R Ultra for around $330?
does the Ultra even takedown (it should, its a hinge action, but not every hinge action comes apart)?

has anyone owned either of these rifles? what were your impressions?

does anyone know of a place in Canada like SIR that stocks the BLR Takedown -- the pistol grip version shown above, not the '81. also interested in finding a place that sells the optional scout mount for them.

SIR mailorder sells only the '81 version of the BLR Takedown, with the straight grip stock and non-schnabel forend. ordinarily id go straight for the straight gripped lever but in this case i think the above looks like a nicer configuration.

i suppose the BLR would be the next best thing to a takedown bolt action, seeing as it basically *is* a modern bolt action rifle, with a lever operated bolt and box magazine. it would be even more compact than a bolt action.

I think these BLR's are best with a scout mounted scope in front of the action. I'm not big on scout mounts. The field of view isn't big enough for my liking.

the benefit of the scope mounted on the barrel is basically repeatability.
i read that these guys demonstrating the BLT takedown had a scout mount on it, took a shot, removed the barrel after each shot, then reattached it. they fired off several rounds like this. the POI did not change between barrel removals.

with the scope mounted on the receiver, no matter how tight the barrel/receiver lockup is you will still have a wandering POI. i would prefer a traditional scope mount but in this case it seems scout is the way to go for accuracy.

as for the field of view -- the trick with scout mounts is to not totally focus your eyes through the objective of the scope. use a low 1.5-2.5 power scout scope and just track with the scope but keep both eyes open, you are able to target with the crosshair and also maintain a full field of view outside the scope. at least thats how it works for me, its hard to explain. treat it more like a red-dot and less like a scope.

want a well priced takedown, buy yourself a marlin 336, or winchester 1894, and ship it to Dlask... they do a nice takedown conversion on them...
Wild west guns does great takedowns on the 1895's
HS makes takedown boltrifles that can be had for well under 5 g's,
as do many many gunsmiths...
Lots of options, not just a moviegun... Though thats the first I've seen of a BLR...

Nice...

if you want a takedown 94, just get a screwdriver and take off the butt stock. there, i just saved you $420.

Somewhere I saw an ad for a gunshop that was offering just that. They drill out a hole in the buttstock(with a rubber plug supplied) and supply a madeup T-handle wrench to fit the stockbolt. Seemed a slick way to get an almost takedown rifle.

But not really a take down.
The cool thing about proper take downs is that you should be able to get additional bbls fitted so long as the chambering has the same bolt head requirement i.e. a 30-06 could have additional bbls in 257 Roberts, 25-06, 6.5x57, 270 Win, 7x57, 280 Rem, 8x57, 338-06, 35 Whelen or 9.3x62.
The 308 family is equally flexible - everything from 22-250, 243, 260 Rem, 7mm-08 to 338 Federal and 358 Win.
And then there's the list of standard length magnums which seem to grow longer by the year.
In a rifle chambered for 7mm Rem Mag, providing it has cross bolts and proper bedding, you could chamber 257 Wby, 270 Wby, 300 Win, 338 Win, 375 Ruger, and 458 Win.
With such a wide range of popular cartridges I still can't understand why manufacturers haven't got in on the act years ago.

yeah by takedown i meant conveniently breaks down with the flip of a lever or something like that.... if it involves screwdrivers and sockets and things then hell, you can take apart a lot of guns :)

does anyone know who is selling the pistol grip BLR takedown in Canada? SIR mailorder only has the Lightweight '81 version, which has the straight grip.
