I always enjoyed hearing the great hunting stories from my ex's family in BC.
Matter of fact, these kind of outdoor adventure stories are the greatest things I miss about seeing and being around the men in her family.
Long story short, Pete was a veteran of WW2 and the Calgary Highlanders pretty much pressed him into being one of their unit snipers by virtue of his hunting/trapping and superior marksmen abilities.
Once the war was over he happily returned to his trapline just outside Beaverlodge. Two of his son in laws were purported hunters too. Harvey came from a rancher upbringing in the Peace, although too young to serve in WW2, he helped his father working the farm while his older brothers were at war. Ernie was another guy altogether about the same age as Harvey. A city boy with a very good job (car salesman) and he could afford the best money could buy. Ernie purchased a brand new shiny Savage Model 99 in 300 Savage complete with a scope and sling. His frequent requests to go hunting with Pete were finally answered. Pete agreed to this only if Harvey could accompany them too. This was kept secret from Ernie. The moose hunt started with them travelling together to one decent spot then splitting up after agreeing to meet at lunch or before that if one of them got something. The purpose was deer or moose hunting IIRC.
Some time in the late morning there were two shots heard. The three soon met in one place as previously agreed. Apparently Ernie 'only' shot two grizzly bear cubs he stumbled across alone in the forest! Pete and Harv immediately asked him where was the mother bear as he look at him incredulously!?!?
The words were barely spoken and the three men were shaken by a horrendously long and loud roar.
The grizzly found her two dead cubs and discovered Ernie, after tracking him, now in the company of his two hunting companions across the river from her position, on the opposite river bank.
They were witnesses to her angry charge through the shallow river water and all three men immediately began rapidly discharging their rifles at the charging behemoth. Finally, almost right about their feet, she finally fell dead. Their smoking rifles now empty of all cartridges.
Ernie was never invited on a hunting trip ever again. He took up boating and camping instead.
A true story.
