Taking a pistol hunting in US

I am planning a prairie dog hunt to the US and was wondering how I would take my pistol. I will have the hunting licence and guide information… Is it possible with the handgun ban rules?

Yes, it's still possible. The only new wrinkle is the requirement to get yet another permit, and to pay yet another tax.

Export with form 6? Sure.

Reimportation now becomes tricky. I heard of guys trying to come back after they put the import ban in place and they had their guns seized.

Well the pistol getting seized on the way back is a bit of a problem.

I would expect that if you have the paperwork in place - reg cert, Form 6 NIA etc, hunting lic, it should not be a problem.

You can easily prove you owned it prior to taking it to the USA

You'll need import paperwork to bring your gun back.
All handgun imports need to be approved before trying to re-enter Canada with the gun.
Doesn't matter how long you've owned it, by taking it to the US, you have effectively exported it from Canada and need permission to bring it back (current BS rules)

Yes, I know a few people that compete in the US and have done this successfully by completing the import ppw as pauls mentioned in his post
