I am new to ARs...is there any trick to getting the barrel off? I got the gas tube out, the handguards off, and I have a nice ncstar AR wrench...but I cannot get the barrel nut to budge. I have run out of swear words and I don't want to damage the nut itself...is there a trick to it that I am missing? This is a new to me, but very used AR, it does not look like the gas tube had been taken out in a long time.

Thanks!

Well...I am doing it right...but those little taps he gave with the hammer won't do jack to this barrel nut! Looks like I need to keep working at it! Thanks.

Also, remember that the barrel nut can be between 30 and 80 lbs-ft. If by chance yours is at the upper end that's quite a bit of force to overcome...(think lug nut on a car).

ive seen several ar wrenches that allow the installation of a breaker bar as well... not sure which one you are using though...

I can use a bar, I don't have one, but it has the square hole for a ratchet handel. I am just not used to using this much force on a gun without risking breaking something. I order the insert for my vice from brownells and I will wait for it before I try again.

it's so easy, even a cave man can do it. lol... Yeah maybe the previous owner used super glued on it lol.. spray them machine oil in the barrel nut then start to turn it.
That video able is helpful if you have tool. if you don't, ask your buddy to on on the upper and you turn it. Remember to use the clothing to cover the upper, so your buddy can have more grip while you are twisting it out.. :D

I find most complete uppers from all the popular suppliers, have barels that are torqued on super tight (in that 80+ft/lbs range); I'm basing this off of 6 uppers I've bought in the last several years. All were a major PIA to remove. Good luck! (I had one RRA complete upper that I thought had a FH that was welded or pinned on it was so tight).

Odd way to clamp the reciver block in a vice, and not using the insert makes little sense.

If it is not right it is wrong. Do it how Brownells intended the tools to be used.

As for the barrrel nut some people and manufacturers have been known to use locktite. So try a little heat.

I recently changed my barrel for a RRA 10.5 inch and experienced the same problems. My wife's hairdryer ended up being the solution. As Gunnerlove mentionned, there was some kind of locktite in it.

Encountered one that was so tight I was tempted to put it on the lathe and turn the barrel nut off. If another one comes along like that, I will do just that, rather than risk damaging the upper.

I use the proper upper block and proper wrench - sometimes you might need a longer breaker bar to attach to the wrench to get it going.

Do you have a NORC?

I destroyed a nut wrench and it didn't budge but Mr. Dremel and cutting wheel ended my sorrow.

I clamped the barrel instead of the receiver. I have a hydrualic press I use for bolt rifles.

It is an eagle arms m15, but it is used so may be loctited or just hasn't been taken off before. I haven't gotten the vice block yet but I will post an update when I do.

Update: it turns out I F#$%# hate ar15s! Well, not quite...but getting there!

I have the tools, I cannot get this thing off...tomorrow I will try the hair dryer...after that...c4.
