Taking out scratched on Stainless Parts

Hi All.

Two very quick questions...

The top of my Marlin 1895 Stainless action where the 4 screws are (for sight mounting) has some minor scratching and also a small one on the non ejection port side. Not too bad at all but I'd like to polish them out.

I have 800 and 1200 wet and dry.

Q1: Do I use oil or a spot of water with the wet and dry

Q2: Which direction do I do my polishing in?

Any other suggestions or tips would be welcomed.

Thanks.

A picture would help a lot. I'm assuming that the finish is near a mirror finish so I wouldn't touch it with 1200 paper you'll make it look like a badgers ass. Always polish in the same direction as the existing tool marks. Unless you are prepared to change the appearance or have a lot of time I'd think you are better off living with the scratches.

To do it right, tear it all down and leave all the screws out of the action. Most of the 1895's have the factory finish running top to bottom on the sides and front to back on the top of the reciever. They are very seldom mirror finish, so if you can see the factory buffing direction in the metal, start with the 800 and a little gun oil. Do the whole side where the blemish is, not just the spot.
