For my hunting guns I have a 30-30 and a 308. Both are tack drivers and I love them.
But...
In true gun nut fashion, I want a Marlin 1895sbl 45-70 but can't really justify it. They're beautiful (and damn expensive) and the cartridge has a mystique that just won't let me go.

Clearly the 45-70 isn't going to fill a void in my hunting folder. Should I bother?
Am I obsessing? Will this pass?

You guys are only ever on the "buy it" team, so let's see if you can push me over the edge.

If you ask us to talk you into it... you are at fault for buying it.... since you asked us to pressure you...
if you you ask us to talk you out of it, then it is our fault if you cave..... that is how I get away with unnecessary purchases...

Don't do it

Everyone should own a big bore once. They are fun and life is short. Please post pics when you succumb!

I agree. It will be a little while before I save up for it.

Don't do it

buy bigger. Spend more. Treat yourself

Go on... I look around and dont' see a different big bore that appeals to me. Maaaybe the 375 H&H. BUT I don't want something stupid. Collar bone crackers, and moose destroyers don't appeal to me.

Well I'm gonna be one of the ones that screams BUY ONE!

I have a 1895GS and the 26" 1895CB and I cannot express how much fun big bores are especially Marlin 1895's. I love the 45-70 so much I just bought a 458 win mag bolt gun to have more .458 fun. It's a completely different experience than your run of the mill 308 or (insert any bottle necked whiz-bang cartridge here).

Buy it. You won't regret it.

I say do it. I scratched my 45-70 itch with an 1886 Mirokuchester and love it but that SBL sure has my attention. I need help convincing me that I need more than one 45-70

You have a couple fur getters, what's in the feather department?
Maybe the scale is leaning too far one way?

Honestly I don't know anything about bird hunting. I have four shotguns all 12g but only one would be used for hunting. I'd love to get involved but when you don't know anything about a certain type of hunting it's hard to enter into it. Also, since I don't know about bird hunting it's hard to jsutify buying another shotgun since they aren't really "range" toys. I guess I could start shooting more clays but that's expensive quickly.

IMHO the GBL looks better than stainless. Save yourself the extra cash and it'll be so much easier to justify.

How is the bluing on that? I'm looking for a tough bush gun I don't have to baby. The laminate and stainless in a thunder-chucker seemed a perfect combo.

458? You know mammoths are extinct right? :D
It'd be fun, but I can't justify it to myself until the money is flowing a little faster. Until then, I need to be able to say "this can be used for targets and hunting". If I was going to buy a cannon it'd probably be a 416 Rigby since I think there's something awesome about that cartridge.

If you like the stainless Marlin, go fer it. Blued versions are more to My tastes. Now that quality issues
with Marlins have been addressed, you should have great fun with either one. Nothing wrong with a
.458 as one can easily load'er down to 45-70 levels and have a fun "uber plinker" to toss big boolits
with. Happy shopping.:)

You've got nothing over 30 caliber and you have to ask if you should buy it? What's wrong with you man?

It's all about filling gaps, and then filling imaginary gaps and finally overlapping with questionable rationale.

There's the CGN spirit. Like someone said the other day, on this site its perfectly acceptable to buy a gun because you found a good deal on some ammo.

Then again, if 30 cal can't kill it, I don't want to be within firing range anyway. :)

Is a 45-70 that costs close to a grand a good purchase? Seems steep for a modern lever.

I only have one thing to say.
If you can't run with the big dogs,...stay on the porch.
Of course,...barking is an option.

I just bought an 1895SBL a few weeks ago. I love it! Very accurate, beautiful and well made rifle. I might cry when I get the first scratch on it.

Marlin lever arms are a class of beauties by itself.
You may not justify having an extra rifle sitting in the safe or what not. However, years down the road, you will appreciate that day you went ahead & grabbed it. It will definitely outlast you & will become the pride & joy of your siblings, provided you have one.

I myself own a rare Marlin Model 93 carbine in 32 special caliber. It never stops to amaze me how well made these guns are.
