I've got it in my head that I want a elcan spectre Dr 1-4. (depending on local availability of the kriss)

I like the quick flick option between 1 and 4 and the reticle.

I'm concerned about the mount/ zero procedures though.. are they external?
How hard are the batteries to come by?
the dot is etched in, so even without power, you still have the point of aim?

half of me just wants to go get an eotech, the other wants a elcan...

I know how you feel... I've wanted one for quite some time now. I do know the glass is made by Leica in Midland Ontario. So you would be patriotic if you bought one!! I say do it, it will make all your gun buddies jealous as well...

My gun buddies are so clueless they will just say "should have bought an eotech or and aimpoint, I've never heard of elcan" haha

The made in Canada factor was one I had not considered... What's the warranty like?

Can't say for sure, Questar would know more about that then I would. My buddy has Leica camera lenses and they are lifetime guaranteed. It's the best glass in the world, the only other company that comes close is Zeiss. Like I said, if I could afford it, I would have had one already. The 1800 dollar price tag is enough to scare off a lot of people. Most of them would be ok with aimpoint and the rest... but if you want the best of the best, go for it. It's only money!!! Check out www.elcan.com you should get the answers you need there.

Warranty on Elcans is great. The distributor is in Nova Scotia and they are a very reputable company.

Also great optics, much better optical clarity than say an ACOG, but priced accordingly.

batteries are easy to find, don't need power for an aiming point as power just lights up the reticle. The adjustments are external, I haven't had any issues with mine. But I don't jump out of helicopters with it , can't afford the helicopter! I have a 1-4 on 7.62X39 upper for my truck gun. I have a 1.5-6 on my 223/6.8 upper .

Shooting centre, I don't suppose you guys by any chance carry them? I'd love to try one out and play with it before I plunk down a serious chunk of change.

hahaha.

Thanks back40! that's exactly what I was looking for! I've seen some scopes that if the battery dies, you are SOL. Not that I'm going to be jumping out of helicopters, slaying bodies in the primary, but I am forgetful, and sometimes leave things on. Nothing ruins a shooting trip like optics that don't work due to dead batteries.

to hell and back

I bought my spectre in 09 from Armament Technology. I love the thing, have jumped from helicopters with it and it held together just fine and the warranty is amazing, I sent in my first one in after California had it way with it (lesson learned don't use Trijicon or Nikon lens pens on them, use a lens cloth and lens cleaner) and I had it back in time to go to the big sandbox, will put rounds on target at 600m from a C8 HBFT.

What's wrong with using lens pens?

Piss on it!

I don't know all the details other then you cant dry wipe it WILL scratch the lens, that is my one of two complaints with it, the back lenses is allot tougher and you can dry wipe but using a liquid work better one it too (I just spit on that one and use my shirt). my second complaint is how weak the back up sights on it are I snapped the rear one off on both, the newer ones look stronger. when cleaning the objective lens use a cleaner of some sort or water or what the guy from Elcan said to me "just pee on it!"???

Good to know! - What is it about the glass that dry wipes cause scratches?

You guys are supposed to be talking me out of one haha.

how stiff is the 1-4 lever flip?

yeah the coating on it is not durable at all i usually just pour allot of water on it and use air to dry it if i can and the 1-4 switch is a simple push down and forward, its spring loaded up to lock in not hard at all.
