Am in the market for a lightweight coyote gun. Came across a mint 223 Hawkeye Stainless and it's got me thinking. Never owned an M77 and the synthetic isn't much to get excited over and I've got lots of rifles and most are European. Anyhow, it's within budget and is in mint condition.

Thoughts from owners/users?

I own a couple Ruger M77 and they are one of my favorites (next to the Win Model 70 CRF). My only complaint would be aftermarket stocks are limited, hard to come by, and usually not cheap as I think McMillan would be the only current production synthetic then there are the Boyds for laminate, but heavy. Other than that, the only thing I'd look at in your case is what twist rate they use in the .223, I'd recommend a 1 in 10" minimum, 1 in 9" or 1 in 8" even better. The only thing I don't care for in my .223 (a browning not ruger) is that it is 1 in 12" twist so I haven't been able to stabilize anything more than 55gr.

The Hawkeye .223's are all 9 twist barrels.
I'm a Ruger fan but prefer the MKII's to the Hawkeye rifles. I had the exact rifle that you are looking at and it was very accurate with 55 V-Max and CFE-223. I switched to a MKII KM77-R .223, primarily because I prefer the bright stainless finish to the matte stainless of the Haweye.

I have owned several Ruger rifles, M77 with the tang safety, M77 MK II, and now a Hawkeye. All have proven accurate and very reliable. There is something about the ergonomics of a Ruger that just fit me well. At that price you are getting a good deal if it is in mint shape like you say, I don't think you will be disappointed.

I own 11 m77 variation rifles, they are far and away my favorites...... also, in .223, they come in a 1:9 twist which is pretty much ideal in my books..... that's a great price as well.....
