Gday guys.
miss ya all.

been a little busy with OVerseas NZ hunting out of a Gear bag , back home an running errands trying to pick life back up hey.

So i sold a Vortex diamondback Tactical, an i am to buy a friends Leupold VX2 3-9x40 with a Dial elevation knob aka a CDS? ......... big fan of loopys.

i would like to hear some feedback on these scopes with the CDS.......... i know its now out dated by the FREEDOM cds models? but i am stoked on the price an product of this vx2 3-9x40 to most likely set on to my Kimber montana 7mm08!

replacing a Burris fullfield 3-9............. which will most likely replace the 2-7x33 variX on the 30-06!

Anyone used these CDS VX2s?

thanks alot

I wouldn't use a vx2 on a scope I was dialing often. I consider it as a set it and forget it type scope. Glass is OK. Cds is nice but like I said, not sure how repeatable it would be on a vx2.

I may have, way back I put standard 7/8" target knobs on everything including a 3-9x33 ultralight which may have been a vx2 class, also did fixed fxII in both 4x33 and 6x36 with cds and no issues at all. I would do that over anything vortex myself. ;)

wont be dialling too often but say that 400m shot (would be my max) presents, even 300-350 out to 400m we will say,,, i can dial an send.

currently using that burris fullfield with bdc? ill do 300 but no further as it gets a bit risky to be sure....... the mate i am buying it off had it set for his 7mm08 an dialled 350 dead hold on some red deer in NZ recently ... i later used the rifle an optic for bush stalking Sika deer but didnt really get to use it per say lol--- an when i did it was point shoot 100m or so away job.

im a fan of the vx2 from long ago,,,, i live in the past a bit i noticed.... but for the pice of around $380aud /400nzd, its pretty good to consider the Freedom CDS are $580-$600 down under dollars... which i cant justify for now.

i like it all, realise its gettin a bit long in the tooth these days but darn sight newer than the ol varix ii im running lol.

PS- varix ii is friction an is touchy at best to re zero, typical talk as it takes many shots to re zero etc trial an error.... i want to move it back to the ruger 1 303, an fancy the kimber up with her own gold ring :) but not $600 worth

the mate looks after his gear an im confident its sweet as etc. as its on his gun only recently had he upgraded

* note i wont be going the full CDS custom route, just the numbered "Dial" turret, do my homework on Drop , cheat sheet.... go for it :)

The Vx2 3-9x40 CDS is an excellent scope. I see no difference in repeatability compared to the VX3 CDS scopes. Use with confidence imo.

IMO the vx2 is a better scope than the Freedom. I've had several of each, no tracking problems with any cds I've had.

I would think you'd be fine if you're only dialing out to 400 or so. I would be hesitant to do full rotations and have it return to zero every time. I always still give my scope a good smack with the heel of my hand after adjusting. I'm sure I don't need to but old habits die hard I guess.

yeah cds 1 rotation is 15 minutes, 60 clicks of come up, you lose 2 clicks due to the single rotation stop so 58 clicks, it will take that 7-08 to probably 600 yards easily from a 200 yard zero, heck I get over 500 yards from 12 minutes with a slower 6.5 grendel launching at only 2386 fps with a .5 bc bullet

yeah an so ive read about the scope not having a "Zero Reset" which im not sure what that means.

however the mate mentions, You Zero the scope with the turret off, shoot an sight it, then with 3 grub screws You slip the turret Cap on aligning the 0 with the marking....... thus begins you 14 or so MOAs to play with...... it looked like he could only twist it one full rotation, an then on the way back seemed to say it had a Zero stop back on 0............. which i believe is to be the case!

I sold my Vortex diamondback for cheap, as i didnt want to hoard it gathering Dust an not on a rifle----- so the replacement is directly this 2nd hand VX2 CDS version - exposed turret is no different to the VRTX scope... but atleast only the Elevation is exposed on VX scope...

yeah agree with the call above about being suitable for only the 400, but having enough dial in it to do 5 or 6 hundred meters on Gongs an whatever it works out to be..... plentyyyy far for Me. an too far for my hunting :)

Thanks so much for the information here... i appreciate it. i will go forth an purchase this scope with confidence

I think you've got it understood perfectly. And ya never know when that extra distance can come in handy, it's excellent for scaring the odd coyote as well. ;)

oh I see maybe dingo's or kangaroos in your part of world lol?

and if you end up with one load and study your elevation range and average temp range you can middle that data point and have a turret made up 'speed dial format'(large numbers only at every 50y/m like large 2 then small 2.5, then large 3 then small 3.5...then no charts, no getting slowed down by one more step, just range and dial to the range...it's a very 'hunt' smart system, leupold or Kenton industries can spin one up for you with supplied data

all I do is carry my 10 km/h wind data every 100 in a tiny chart starting at 300 and ending at 500 or 600 if my turret goes that far so the data is there to math out wind solutions but it's not too much data, just enough data, 3-4 points of data that makes easy math when you work in 5 kmh increments which is about as accurate as you can guess afield anyway, so 'quarters' math and only 3-4 data points to keep on stock, or what I do is a little decal on my scope tube I have a local decal maker make for me, black with white letters bolded and about 3/4" wide/deep, then a basic rangefinder and kiss hunting set up

Thanks for your info Blakey boy!

So update. a few months later than expected but the Scope is finally on its way to me. my delay as funds were low........

anyway CDS VX2 coming my wayyyyyy babeyyyyy!! kimber mntana 7mm08 is where it will be parked i rekon!!!! perfect in my opinion. cannot wait!

its goign to be replacing the Fullfield II, older burris scope with hash reticle......

was going to put the burris on the Abolt 3006 but i kind of like the light little Vari X 2-7 on it, so the .222 might get the upgrade yet ha ha!

because the scope come off a 7mm 08, im not expecting to needing to "re zero" or "Re set " the scope turret ay? it should be pretty right an not out by much i wouldnt imagine for a initial sight in!

may be asking some questions next week... stay tuned :)

Well Fellas!!!!!!
