Had a real interesting experience at fogduckers place yesterday. I took a break, and on trying to return to my stand, saw a doe about twenty feet from the stand. I was on the top of a hill, with a bit of cover, and I ducked behind it quickly.
I tried the can call again, and the doe imediately took a few steps towards me. I called again, and she disappeared into the old fence line between the two fields. I figured she was trying to wind me, and quickly moved to where she could not do so.
I hadn't any more than settled when I head her calling. It sounded exactly like the can call, but much softer. She was calling continuously, as she radared in on the exact spot I'd been standing just a few moments before. Would have been an easy shot if I'd had a tag :(. She turned, and looked in my direction, then disappeared over the hill. After a bit I called again to see if any other deer ie; bucks were with her. She came back, charging up over the hill on the trot, ears flared looking everywhere. Stopped and stared right at me, at about thirty feet, then turned and ran away tail down.
Quite an education. For both of us.

Anyone else hear whitetails talk?

JYC:p talking to our deer were ya:D but can you chime in some more of the can call..is it the same one you would use for moose??ive used the one for moose before but neaver tried it on deer..
how do you use it?just a softer call?

I heard a doe bleat this year and YES, it is softer than the can... I think they make the can louder so it carries in the field... I always start really quitely with the calling, be it grunts or bleats or rattling...

Cheers

P.S. Experiences afield are SO awesome!!!

Many times, and they don't all sound the same. This year's chatty buck made a sound like BLEEB, softly and ran straight into my true talker call. Caught me off guard, no deer.

It's a comercial call.
Some are made by Quakerboy, mine is by Knight and Hale. They sound the same, but I think the K&H is a bit louder, and Quakerboy makes at least two sizes.

My 7pt buck came right into the grunt tube calls I made... Deer hunt lasted about 5 mins this year... On the 5th day... Calling works, it just has to be the right call at the right time, done correctly...

Cheers

My hearing sucks.... but when I heard the grunts this year I knew what was coming! It is always an education to hear the deer.... the most calling I ever heard was a few years ago. A Really nice buck was tending a doe about 70 yards out and I listened to him grunt continously for about 15 minutes. He sounded just like a pig with short incessant grunts that came with every breath and every step that he took! I have used this tending grunting in combination with a doe bleat to call deer early in the season a few times since! Once in Bethany I called in four different bucks within a half an hour of continous calling in late October using the tending grunt.... I did manage to arrow one!
Tending grunts work well early and late season.
