Got a set for a Savage, and when I tightened them up they pinch-dented the scope tube a bit. It was a cheap scope at least, but I was under the impression Talley made pretty good stuff. I can fix it easy enough with a little relief grind....but really expected better from them.
Talley rings pinch/dent scope... Is this common?

I assume you are talking about talley lightweights, I have used them on a dozen rem/tikkas with success.
I only ever had 1 issue with talleys. Got a package that was mixed up 1 low and 1 medium, I should have known better, but when I tightened the screws, I got a dent.
I also believe that there is enough play in the screws to mis-align the front and rear lowers and cause an issue.
Now when I install a set I use a 1" or 30mm shaft. I mount the rings and loosen all the screws 1/4 turn. I mount the shaft in the lowers and install the top rings with 2 screws in each. The shaft will block the screw holes so you may have to loosen the top rings and shuffle it back and forth, but I will Loctite and tighten 1 screw in each mount with Loctite (the flange end of the talleys) and let the Loctite dry. Next day I install the other 2 screws and Loctite down. I use the blue/removable Loctite. A friend showed me that you can also out the lightest skim of Loctite under the lowers or on the receiver and that will take out some of the mis-alignment.

Put a micrometer on your scope tube and confirm it's actually 1" (like it's supposed to be unless it's a 30 mm tube).
My money would be on "tolerance out of whack a bit" on your (less expensive) scope, than a problem with the Talley rings.
Talley also makes the Weatherby and Browning branded rings - you don't get to build for them and them put their name on your product by producing rings that will pinch often very expensive scopes that get mounted on their guns.

The only time I ever pinched a scope it was with the Talley lightweights. I find you have to be extra careful in tightening them down equally on both sides.
On Tikkas I do something a bit similar: "somewhat" tighten the base screws, pop in the scope, wiggle a bit, pop out the scope, and tighten the base screws like wheel nuts... A bit on his one, a bit on that one, a bit over here...
Putting the Talleys of the flat top always gave me the alignment heebie-jeebies.
I don't do the skim coat of loctite, though. I've bought used guns where somebody did that, and those guns still have that skim coat. Acetone and methyl hydrate won't even cut it!
I've got three tikkas, one has talley lightweights, the other two have warnes. I quite like the warnes, though they are super heavy.
It seems to pinch the tube right at the gap where the top and bottom meet. No other damage to the tube.... I dunno, seems like I ain't the only one to experience issues with Talley LW rings doing this?
I used a screwdriver with torx bit and did not over torque. Even when I was done the screws were still not tight and the damage was done.
