I have a Tangfoglio 40cal Match and have been seating at a OAL of 1.135. with 4.4g of Tightgroup. Just wondering what others seating to for OAL?

I don't have the same pistol but have been through the OAL excercise many times.

OAL is determined by magazine and bullet ogive shape. Some bullets can be seated longer than others and still not bind in the magazine. I load some long rounds and check to see if I can fill the magazine with them. When I find the length (with a specific bullet) that just barely clears the mag, I note that length in my log book and then load ammo 10 thou shorter.

The other factor to consider is how the bullet ogive fits the chamber. The round has to be loaded short enough that the bullet does not touch the rifling. If it touches it can cause the slide to not lock up or can cause misfires due to a soft headspace.

In my 1911s I load 200 grain semi watcutters. If I load them long, so they just fit the magazine it exposes a bit of the straight shank that engages the rifling. This is OK in my Norincos but causes my Star to jam 30% of the time. I have to seat the bullets 15 thou deeper.

You asked about OAL. The correct answer is "It depends on what bullet you use."

I set all my .40 s&w for 1.127-1.132 regardless of which weight bullet. This is out of a s&w m&p40. I haven't got to the point of wanting to tinker with the c.o.l. yet. If it fits in the mag and goes boom, good enough.
