Hello Everyone, I have just cleaning my father's Marlin 45 Government octagonal barrel manufactured around 1883 (according to oldguns.net). The screw in the tang holding the stock on has thread issues. The thread in the tang is ok. I have emailed Gravel Agency and I have been told that the part is no longer available. I am not sure where else to look.

Dimensions of the screw:
The screw has the standard 1/4-20 thread with a slot cheese head screw with a threaded section that is 0.30" long, a shaft dia of 0.23", head dia of 0.33", shaft length of 1.68" and an overall length of 1.81".

Can anyone help me by pointing me in a direction to look. I am hoping to find something close to original (dark matte finish) and not just a shiny new one from the hardware store.

Thanks.

Is the thread buggered up? Will running a 1/4 20 tap over it work? Does the screw have a slightly tapered shank? Can the vocational wing of a local school help you out? Otherwise see your local gunsmith.

The thread of the screw has been flattened on 2 sides. I ran a die over the screw and it does not bite hard enough. The tang is fine. I ran a tap in the hole to clean the threads and I have a longer bolt in it now. The stock tightens right up. I would like to find the proper finish if possible. I do not know any local gunsmiths in the Kingston area. All the ones that I knew are dead.

Western Gun Parts?
They have I believe a $30 minimum order, so find something
else to go with your part.
I'd send an email to them with your part request to see if they
have this item for you.

Good luck.

A 1/4" cheese head screw has a head height of .175, a 1/4" pan head screw has a head height of .130. Looking at these screw dimensions, it would probably be better to have one made up just like the original one and hot dipped in oil.

Thanks guys. That helps more than you think. I have not told my father yet and I would like to give it back to him in better condition than he gave it to me in.

I will check Western Gun Parts.

Al: Thanks for the correction. You are most likely correct since I just used the internet to match the shape from memory since I do not have it beside me.

I've had good luck finding parts from older Marlins from Wisner's: h ttp://www.wisnersinc.com/

It's been a couple of years since I last ordered, but he was willing to ship to Canada at the time. Let me check my spare parts box... I'm pretty sure I have an tang screw from a Marlin 1889 --- likely won't work, but I'll measure it none-the-less.

Just fyi SFRC has a gun smith.

Thanks for the help. I am just waiting for Ryan's gunsmith to get back to me. I stopped into SFRC on Sat but he was at the range. I should hear back tomorrow when they open.
