I went to a gun show the other day and saw an M1 Garand tanker barrel with the op rod and other parts. I was going to buy it but ended up not buying it.

Could someone please post a pick of what they look like put together?
Are they put together with all of the other M1 Garand parts besides the parts that would allow them to be shorter?
How hard is it to find all of the parts?
How much $$$ do they usually run for?

Thanks
Bart

Just do a google images search for "tanker garand" for pics. The forward hanguard must be shortened or left off. You can buy a ready to use barrel, or have an original shortened and machined with threads and splines. I have seen one done like this using a barrel that had a ruined muzzle from cleaning, but ok rifling further back. The real shame of it is cutting up an oprod and welding it back together. Doing this properly is the real tricky part. All in all I think it's a bad idea. You ruin good original parts, and reduce the value of the rifle in the process. Why not shorten a chinese M14? it will cost much less to accomplish, and the rifle will increase in resale value if the job is properly done.

I remember the days when Atlantic Ordnance (in NB or NS?) was selling those for about $1000 new. You had a choice of .308 or 30-06. I was going to get one but then the winds of change closed down alot of firearm vendors. I'm not sure where AO was getting there stuff from. I thought it was coming from the U.S. at that time.

Spend your money on a socom 16 or less money on a M305-16.
Those mauser tankers Mitchels Mausers(yes I know MM are WAY overpriced)
make now are fine looking rifles but an Enfield tanker would be even better.

Are Garand tankers actually WW2 or army issue? I was under the impresion that
"tanker" was just the word for a cut down milsurp and they had never really existed during the war.

A "tanker" Garand was never issued. Any tanker garand you see is a bubba.

But it's one of the nicer Bubba's :) .....but probably suited better to the
7.62mm conversions.

There were experimental ones done by Springfield but the muzzle flash was too bad due to the shortened barrel. There's a brief section in Scott Duffs book about it.

If the barrel is a legal 18" U.S. barrel, it becomes a restricted firearm in Canada. Keep that in mind, you will have to re register it after the new barrel is installed!
