Here's the hide of my buck so far. Almost totally fleshed out with just a bit more to go. Next will be applying a salt paste to keep it till I have all of my supplies together. I also have 2 mulie hides and an elk hide to do as well. It'll be a good winter project. I'll keep you informed of the progress and the results.

A hunter/trapper friend of mine used to make his own buckskin clothes from deer hides. He made a vial conncoction of deer brains, wood ashes and a few other things. He found the recipe in a old book. He put it all in a washtub outside of his house. It got pretty ripe. But when he was done he had the nicest softest cream colored buckskin I've ever seen.

Good luck with your tanning. johnes50

Gilly, I am almost through with tanningn my Elk hide as well. It is my first one. I used a wire buffing cup on my makita angle grinder to get the membranes off the hide. The easiest curing solution I found on the net was using Salt and some Alum, let it cure for a week or so and then stretch it out and rub warmed neats foot oil into it. After this I guess you do the massaging to soften the hide. Haven't gotten that far yet but it looks pretty good. I have a couple spots to patch up around the legs but doubt I will bother. It is just my first one and I will call it a learning experience. Next one I will be more careful.

Are you going to leave the hair on?

This is my first attempt as well. I am going to remove the hair once I am set up with ingredients and so forth. I plan on brain tanning this one then smoking it. I have wood ashes from my wood stove by the 5 gallon pail full. Its messy but I sure hope it turns out.

Hey Gilly

I can't remember where I heard it but I'm sure I was told to use HARDWOOD ashes, not softwood. Don't know why...maybe the resins in the wood. Maybe someone can confirm this or tell me I'm full of it.

Good luck.

PS

Some holes started showing up after the hide was stretched onto the frame, guess I'll have to be super careful on my next skinning job.

I was just going to say... How many time did you shoot the poor thing?;) Just kidding. Looks good so far. I've never tanned anything before but its somthing I might try one day. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Cheers

I just read the same thing somewhere on the net, I also read on the net that you can just leave it soaking in water, changing the water daily, and the hair should start to slip, and if it does'nt to sprinkle ashes and roll up, fur side in.
