hey guys, just bought my first sks, siminov with tapco stock and 20/5rnd mag. Has anybody with this combo encountered this issue...
Removing the stock mag was no issue, but when it came to putting the new tapco in, it fit too tight. I actually had to shave some of the mag release catch off so it would fit in.
Second, it seems like the front part of the (excuse me) round pusher upper carries a lot of friction against the front inside part of the magazine, therefore when you pull back the bolt it takes some force (more than one would think necessary).
Will this just get better with time?

Thanks!

Evan

Usually nothing needs to be shaved on the SKS Tapco stock for the Tapco mags, just the regular SKS laminate/wood stocks require some shaving. I bought five of the Tapco 5/20s from Fabsports and they go in and out of my Tapco'd SKS effortlessly. Feeding is just as smooth as with the original mag. Maybe try another Tapco mag just in case yours is damaged or defective.

If you have a tapco stock there is no modification needed to the stock. The modification that will be needed is to the duckbill part of the magazine, do not remove any material from the mag release.

There should be a couple of thread's if you can manage to figure out how to use the search, on how to...
  • Modify your bolt to allow the mags to drop free.
  • Modify your magazine to install & feed properly.
If you are having troubles finding them post back as I think I got the vid's saved some were.

What you described sounds like an issue I encountered as well.
When I first installed my tapco 5/20 mag in my 51 Tula it was very hard to get in all the way in there. I just removed it and put it in a few times and it freed it up a lot. You're no different, just jam it in the first few times and after doing it a dozen times it should slide in like butter. I would advise against shaving material from the mag release area. Only do it if its just way too tight

I had to shave the magazine release catch on the mag just so it would fit in, it does now. But the other issue is when the mag is empty inside the gun (I have not shot any rounds yet) when I pull on the bolt it feels like it is catching on the spring loaded plate inside the mag.
The Tapco mag, when you push down on the front of the spring loaded plate (please excuse my wording) its sticky, is this normal? I believe this is the cause of the bolt becoming stuck. Am I right

I wonder if these issues have to do with the type of SKS intstalled in the Tapco stock. My two Russian SKSes are still in their original stocks and my Norinco SKS is in the Tapco stock. Maybe if I put the Russians in the Tapco stock the mags wouldn't insert and remove so easy?

FabSports you now have a huge Fan! Great instructions and it fits like a glove! I did have to file a slight downward angle in the follower to alleviate the sticky bolt return. Can't wait to get out shooting, its my first sks :)
