Today I looked at a 1951 SKS that aleady had installed on it a Tapco (not Fab, as I had posted earlier) non-folding stock and a Tapco (not Fab, as I had posted earlier) removable magazine. I like the look of the thing over the OEM stock and the length of pull on the Tapco is far better for me.

First, I must say that the quality of the metal parts and workmanship on the SKS appears to be excellent. In particular, that bayonet system is very impressive and so is the reciver and even the dust cap. The bolt looks massive and rugged. I can see why people are impressed with the SKS.

Anyway, the reason I'm writing is to ascertain the reliability/durability of the Tapco magazine. Those plastic lips sure look flimsy and the clerk said he was not even sure if the stripper clip could be used to load the mag.

So, is that plastic magazine reliable and durable?

Thanks

I have 2 of the Tapco plastic mags for my SKS and I seem to only use one as the stripper clips work just fine.

Thanks for bothering to reply. Before I started this thread I did a search for "SKS Fabco magazine" when it should have been " SKS Tapco magazine". When I naturally got no results, I started this thread. Then, when another member woke me up, I edited the thread, did another search, and realized that there was already a wealth of information about the mag. Sorry about that, folks.

I find it hard to beleive that those fragile-looking lips last for as long as they apparently do.

Can you disassemble the Tapco mags so you can clean the insides when need be? Or are they sealed? Do most people buy the 10rd or 20rd'ers? Same performance between the 2 capacities? Thx.

You can dis-assemble them but you have to drill a small hole in the base plate in order to depress the latching plate which holds the base plate on....its Tapcos way of ensuring the mag wont be altered

Can you still reassemble it after drilling a hole in it without the mag falling apart?

Yes, the hole is used to depress the spring/latch, then slide the bottom cover off. You are not destroying it with a 2mm hole.
DO NOT alter the mag capacity.....

No of course not, that's a good way to go to jail and have your natural born rights taken away from you. I'm interested between the 5/10rd vs 5/20rd because I've heard that it is easier to load the cartridges in the pinned 5/20rd (less spring tension) than it is in the pinned 5/10rd Tapco magazine. That's what I meant by difference in performance between the 2 capacities. :p It's good to know you can clean them, with a minor mod. I wounder if Tapco's mags are all like that, or they make them tamper proof just for us Canadians? Considering the already inflated prices for them in Canada, it would be even worse if the mags got dirty and you had to chuck them because you didn't know how to disassemble them for cleaning.

i just picked up the tapco.. i can only use 4 rounds in mine.. 5 rounds is too tight and it wont pick up the top round.. it just jams.

I ran into all the feed problems when I got my 2 mags, lots of jams. So bad I gave up using them for a while. But...a lot of pple on here said they would loosen up and wear to fit the rifle........TRUE.
I will never trusted these mags........but after a couple of hundred rounds the difference was like night and day...no more jams and definite signs of slight wear on both mags in the same place. Just a case of letting em bed in a bit.]
They do look good on the rifle tho..just wouldnt stake my life on one

I have a couple tapco 5/20 round mags, and have heard of drilling holes in the bottom to be able to take them apart. But I am wondering if this is considered permanently altering them and thus illegal?

The way the Mounties are right now I wouldnt even paint the bugger, and drilling holes in it would probably come under the "altering" heading..but they have to be cleaned somehow. I dont recall seeing the word " disposable " when I bought mine.
