Tapco or Promag?

So I picked up a magwedge kwik rail for one of my sks's, I have a 3.5x20 fixed power scope I'll be putting on it. My wife is interested in shooting more with an optic and I'd like to switch up one of the two sks we have. I'm not excited at losing the use of stripper clips, so I guess I'll have to try a detachable mag...

I found 5/10 poly promags and 5/20 tapco mags locally, I'd prefer the 5/10 length of mag. I like the size of the stock mag and the pinned 20 & 30 rd mags look to long imho.

Has anyone used the 5/10 promags with success, will the bolt hold open still work with them? I know some fitting and filing will need to happen and I'm fine with dong that, which brand is generally better.

I know I know, stick to the stock mag lol, I will try manually loading the stock mag before I go and buy a detachable mag but it will be nice to have a few 5/10 promags preloaded if they work well with a bit of fitting. Bolt hold open working is a must have for me.

Hopefully this will motivate the wife to come shooting more often, she got all excited over the new shell deflector and scope I rigged up on an svt40.

Any feedback or input is appreciated.

Both are great, both operate the same in the SKS.... i personally prefer the tapco 5/20 mags because when crouched/sitting on a hill , I rest the mag on my knee and it acts as a great monopod, plus the 5/20 's give you better grip for loading/ unloading the mag, as well as slipping into a mag pouch. The 5/10 is handier for shooting off bench rests and shooting bags cus the 5/20s often get in the way.

Does the bolt hold open still work with both? That's the biggest deal breaker for me, if that doesn't work I'll just keep the stock mag and load by hand and keep the second sks for use with strippers.

The 5/10 would be my first choice, the wife likes shooting from bags more than not and I do both bag and standing. I like he short look more than the 5/20 rnd mags anyway.

Hey
I have the tapco mags 5/20 and find not problems...don't forget to do the bolt mod...this way you can insert mag with bolt closed or open...I found the two sks's that I have the non tula works perfectly with 5 rounds loaded the tula one however is not so user friendly...doesn't like 5 rounds...meaning if i load mags to 5 they won't click into place if I remove one round then it clicks into place with bolt closed...buddy of mine just installed the G9 SKS MAGAZINE ADAPTOR and loves the way they just drop so nicely..he says makes his sks more fun to shoot now instead of the tapco mags...
Hope this helps
Glenn.

The Tapco may need minor filing to fit, especially regarding the bolt hold open function.

I would skip the all out bolt mod for closed action mag insertion.
Because when you think about it, you will really only use that feature when you first begin shooting the rifle.
Considering after emptying mags the bolt will hold open anyway in preparation for a reload.

Yeah that's my outlook on it too, I don't see the need to modify the bolt. I don't plan on inserting a mag unless the bolt is open like it normally would be if loading with stripper clips, look like I'll be grabbing a Promag 5/10 or two once I get the kwik rail mounted and things sighted in.

Tazzharm,
If you disassemble your mag for cleaning, and very, very carefully trim the blocking rod ever so slightly you can fit a full legal five round magazine in your sks, just make sure you dont trim too much or else you will be stuck putting in a rivet :(
