Tapco SKS gas piston.

Personally, I would buy a nice Chinese military gas piston from Marstar or Lever Arms.
I bought one as a "back-up". The Chinese definitely used quality steel.

I got a spare chinese gas tube and piston one a while ago, sanded the chinese wood down and painted it black with a can of truck bedliner. It worked quite well, i was impressed.
I found out a little interesting fact on the differences between years of SKS as well. The spare gas tube/piston fit perfectly on my 1950 with only minor filing of the ramp to close the latch, but when i tried it on my 1953 it was like 1/8" too long. I would have assumed that the gas tubes were the same throughout, but i guess not, so you may have to do a litlle bit of filing no matter what you go with.

Yeah, I also bought a spare Izhevsk SKS gas tube that I fitted to my 1952 Tula SKS and it required filing... but it was VERY easy to file it to fit.
Which end is too large, the bigger front end or the rod itself at the back end? If you are going to sand anything, i would either try to sand out the inside of the tapco tube or get a second gas rod and maybe try sanding it down, but i would not want to alter the rod itself in any way unless i absolutly had to.
As far as i know the tapco tube should fit, try talking to the dealer you got it from, it may be defective.
