Hey out there. I am new to shooting and hunting this year. I was told by a buddy that he puts tape on the end of the barrel when hunting so nothing get down it. He says that it is not dangerous and does not affect the accuracy of the bullet. Is this the case? I'm a little nervous to place anything on the end of the barrel of my gun. Let me know if any of you guys do this and what your experiences are with it. Thanks

Putting tape over the muzzle has been pretty well standard practice for many years.
It presents no danger and does not effect the shot.
The reason it is safe, is because as the bullet speeds down the barrel, the bullet acts like the piston of a pump and vigorously pushes the air in the barrel out ahead of it. This air pressure removes, or breaks the tape, well before the bullet even hits it.

I do it every time I hunt, its like H4831 says, its off the barrel before the bullet ever gets there, doesn't affect accuracy in any way (I've done tests from a bench). Nothing to worry about the tape (and as it so happens, taping the barrel means you also have nothing to worry about getting crap in your barrel). All you need is one strip of electrical tape, you don't need to go crazy using a whole roll of duct tape or anything so extreme!

I use masking tape. And few wraps of it around the barrel for replacement when the end blows away...

It doesn't much matter what kind of tape, just a little over the muzzle keeps obstructions out and is perfectly safe. Many have been doing this for many years. It also keeps the dust and debris from your gun case out of the muzzle. I see a lot of damage to the bores at the muzzle from shots being firing with minor dust/debris in the barrel... it wears the rifling quickly.

Just tape on a condom. Size will depend on gauge or caliber. It's also a good conversation starter if you meet any lady hunters. You probably won't need the ribbed or lubed style. :D

Black, blue or red electrical tape ##### crossed then a couple of wraps on the end gives protection from moisture and debris and leaves enough for replacement if you take a shot. I would use masking tape or painters tape because it can be a pain in the a&$ to take of after it's gotten wet.

I've been putting electrical tape over the end of my barrels when hunting for several decades now.
As long as nothing is put "in" the barrel, no harm will come, and of course, that is what you are preventing with the tape.
I now use a bright colored tape, and as one poster said, wrap additional tape around the barrel ove the ends of the piece that cover the muzzle.
This serves as spare if a shot is taken.

Tape, finger condoms, mini-balloons, and sandwich baggies will keep rain, snow, and debris from getting in your rifle barrel. Has no ill-effects to shooting as said in above posts. Its a good idea and easy to improvise.

could there be a legal consequense to using bright coloured tape on a muzzle? I am thinking something along the lines of imitating a toy firearm, as far out as that sounds.
