Hey guys. Just picked up a sweet Tar 21. The stock is stamped 223 rem made in Israel. But there are no stampings stating that the Canadian version can safely fire 556. The manual says both but I'm a bit worried if it is only rated to fire 223.

Any info would be appreciated.

Yea 556 I have fired some very hot 556 loads through mine. takes it like a champ. They only mark it 223 for export/import.

So the chamber and barrel are rated for 556. That's good. Is it stamped anywhere or are all they bare?

That's strang as Canada has 556 non rest rifles. Why hide it??

no idea, just the way it is. A lot of modern Ar-15's have barrels stamped 223 but are rated for 556. I know its more of the older rifles that are specific to 223 only.

Dont think Israel can export 5.56 caliber for commercial use. Label 5.56 to .223 and your good to go.

The Yanks are the same way. Some 5.56 rifles are labeled .223 to get up here as well.

It is not that Canada cares about import, but other countries about export.

The very brief story is: assume anything manufactured new recently that is marked with a military caliber (5.56x45mm, 7.62x51mm, 7.62x63mm...) is deemed a "military weapon" and therefor controlled export from a lot of countries... but if you mark it with the identical civilian caliber (.233 Win, .308 Win, .30-06 Springfield...) than it's all right and fine and under a lot less scrutiny and BS...

Ok, way too dang brief explanation... I get it... but it's for the idea and I'm too lazy to write the encyclopedia on how dumb it really is. :runaway:

In the US they use the SAMMI spec for 223 which is as it was originally specified for a 55 grain bullet, while in Europe the use the CIP spec which is different. The 223 and and 5.56x45 have the same cartridge case dimensions while the throat dimensions are different between the SAMMI and CIP standards. I believe that is is why manufacturers like CZ specifically state that 5.56 can be used in there 223 caliber rifles, however I also agree that a lot of 5.56 rifles are labeled as 223 in order to get around import and export restrictions.

Yes. I understand now. But it sure is confusing and nerve racking for the civilian canadian consumer. Puts my mind is st ease now. Was a bit confused.

Now it's time to start the ACCESORIES :)
