So I've put it off for a bit but finally decided to purchase one. Looking for suggestions/reviews from ya'll who have either owned both or shot both. The X95 is running at least $500 more which would go a longways towards a nice optic for the top. So my question is would you spend more on the X95 or would you buy the Tar 21 and why either way... Specifically looking for info from those that have handled both, not just watched a bunch of youtube videos like me. Not looking for a target gun, just a fun/coyote killing gun.

Cheers boys.

First question to you,

have you handled them? And can you handle them before you decide to buy?

We could all recommend X or Y, but in the ends, it's also how they feel in your hands! :)

The x95 is an evolution to the TAR 21...

Where are you in ontario? Maybe someone local to you can help you handle one, even dry would be better than live fire at the range.

Nope neither. And unfortunately in my neck if the woods they are not something that is "stocked"... An online purchase is the only way I would receive or handle one.

This is a tough question to answer. You really need to handle both in every way. If you’re familiar with the AR, then the X95 is slightly more comfortable due to the mag release position, but only slightly as it’s not quite in the standard position. The X95 trigger is better also. The charging handle is also in a closer position so you don’t need to reach as far for it. Accuracy is comparable between the two.
Other than a few more doodads and accessories, they are very similar guns.

I own the TAR-21 Gen 2.5. I’m happy with it. I’ve looked at and shot multiple X95s. I like them but not enough to spend more money to buy one as the differences or improvements aren’t worth the money to me. This varies with everyone obviously.

I think you’ll like either platform once you buy it. Remember it’s a bullpup and has a totally different feel than any normal rifle. If I were to buy one now, I would likely still pick the original, used but with an upgraded trigger. And, like you said, spend the rest on a nice optic or ammo!

Well this will be tough... I have an x95, and range-fired it. I've only dry handled a previous gen tavor, so can't really compare the firing part.

For handling, they're both bullpups, so you have to get used to them. I prefer the x95's mag release at the tip of my trigger finger vice the tavor's original location.

The bolt release is funky on both, that's the best I can say for that.

I like the removable panels in the front of the x95, allows for a lot of options!

In any case, wait until a retailler has a sale on them... happens quasi-regularly.. i say mine at 10% off, which makes quite a difference at 2400+$!

I own a Tavor, and with the Giesselle upgrades it is very nice.

I looked at both, but for my larger stature, (and big hands) the Tavor has a bit more room.

I found the X95 magwell too close to the grip, and my wrist rubbed in an uncomfortable spot.

Same with me. I spent a lot of money on mine and was really excited when it showed up in the mail but I sold it at a loss because the ergonomics just didn't work for me.

If you plan on using a bipod with your Tavor then the Tar 21 with a podium bipod is the way to go. You don't want to be mounting a bipod on the forend with these rifles. You end up with the Swiss Arms bipod effect. if not then the X95.

I've handled both and can say that the differences are not very substantial. I do prefer the boxier look for the X95, but it seems most don't as the Tavor 7 will have an appearance closer to that of the Tar 21 anyway.

Both rifles were quite short and really not very comfortable for me to hold given my long reach. An AR hit the spot much better for me.

Had both X95 is superior.

Except for the bipod situation. If planning on using as an all around rifle then the Tar 21 with the podium has the advantage. Frankly it's the main reason I've kept my Tar 21 rifles and not gone to the X95. That and I have my Tar 21 rifles setup how I like them.

I should add to the OP that in terms of price: Factor in what the X95 comes with out of the box. 1) handguard with rails. No aftermarket, drilling etc and you get all three sides not just two. About $80 for a good Tar 21 aluminum bottom rail. 2) Trigger is half the weight. Close to $150 for the aftermarket equivalent in the Tar 21. 3) Comes with single point QR options rather than having to buy the gasket with built in QR which was another $80 if I remember correctly. You're now within $200 difference. You still get a charging handle that is closer/quicker and the option of the IDF trigger guard (which I do like for a CQB style carbine). Also the AR style mag release is nice. Although I have no issues doing the shooting hand thumb trick for mag changes with the Tar 21. Really the price works out to be pretty close if you want those features.

But they have said there won't be a podium bipod for the X95. One of the biggest issues with the Tavor for accuracy is the pressure on the forend causing vertical stringing. It's the same with the Swiss Arms PE90. I have to put the bag right in front of the mag with the PE90 to avoid this. Ask anyone who has used the build in bipod about the results. Well it's the same for the Tavor. Put a bipod on the forend and you risk this. The podium gets rid of this issue and is fairly stable. It's actually fairly neat. This from someone who was very skeptical at first regarding these. If the podium was available for the X95 then it would have everything in it's favour. Hopefully FAB defense changes their mind on the podium for the X95.

Like I said before. X95, unless you want to use a bipod with it. Then the Tar 21 at this time is the winner due to the podium bipod option.

Having owned both, my preference goes to the Tar21. If you're planning on shooting it with the Israeli supported shooting style, I found the original to be more comfortable and stable. The X95 worked better if it was outfitted like a AR with foregrips, etc. To me, it seemed like the pistol grip on the Tar21 was further forward with a shorter foreend, whereas the X95 had a more central pistol grip and a longer foreend. Maybe I'm out to lunch on the dimensions, but I found that I preferred the dimensions on the original.

My advice would be to pick up a Tar21 on the EE and use the money you save on a Geissele Lightning Bow. The remainder can go towards ammo, etc.

Bipods dont belong on bullpups. and if you really need one put an Atlas on the front of a X95 at least doesn't act like a teeter totter like that podium...lol...

Hahha, I'll stick with the podium. :) . By the way the podium was designed by Tamir Porat who designed the Tavor TAR 21.
