Working on developing a load for:
savage model 10 precision carbine, .223 rem 20" barrel, 1:9 twist

brass, Lapua .223 match

projectile, Hornady ELD Match Reloading Projectiles 22491
.22 Caliber
.224 Diameter
52 Grain ELD Match Projectile
G1 Ballistic Coefficient .247
G7 Ballistic Coefficient N/A
Sectional Density .148

primer, cci small rifle 400

powder, IMR 3031

Reference used for load development, Hodgdon25th edition, pg 115, 52-53gr start load 22.0 to 24.0

I did loads of 5 rounds each starting at 22.0 up to 22.9 and did not see any pressure sign but could use help to interrupt the grouping or should I go up more on powder another set of 5 rounds until as long as there are no high pressure signs?
unfortunately I do not have a chronograph and the range is only 100m. with the exception of the 22.1 load the aim point is on center but the 22.1 I used a point below center as marked. When I got to the 22.8 loads I noticed a white smoke coming out from the barrel, maybe this is normal or it unburnt powder? bolt did not show any issues with opening and primer and casing looked good.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

William

Do you have any other powder? I would try 5-10 others before going to 3031...but if that's all you got I would go with the charge weight that gave you the least vertical and play with seating depths and try again.

Thanks for the input.

I do have a pound of Vaget powder that can be used, bought it years ago but never used. My old powder book does not list it but i think there is info on the Hodgdon site for loads.
I'm setting the jump space .015", how closes or far would you experiment with?

in my 2 Savage 10s I've had good results with H4198 + Nosler BT light bullet loads and Varget, H322, CFE223 + Hornady 75gr match loads
both barrels are 22" 1-in-9 just that one is sporter contour the other is medium contour

If that was my rifle, i would try the Sierra 69 Match bullet, 20 thou off the landings with 24 to 25 gr of varget.

This works in every 1:9 or faster 223 I have ever had.

William as far as seating depth I would say start going ten thou deeper each group. Do 0.025, 0.035 etc.

Lot of good input, Thanks everyone.
Heavier projectile is the suggestion so Will get some Sierra 69 Match and Hornady 75gr match, with varget.
Will seat .02" off land, then see how changing distance work on this rifle.
Thanks again

I am having wonderful success 0.5 MOA with 26 gr CFE223 and 55 gr CamPro. Seating 0.02" off lands. 0.75 MOA with near twice the jump. 2 guns tested were Rem 700 ADL Varmint and Savage Mod 10 Predator. Savage has a longer chamber.

Finally got back at this project the heavier 69gr and vaget mix I'm seeing much tighter groups. now need to try different jump distances.
Just got some 75gr and will test them out next.
