Hi and welcome to CGN.
The suggestions will be endless. Narrowing the search will be easiest if we know;
1- the budget, this is the biggest contributing factor. I hear AICS makes a nice rifle, but we're talking close to $10,000. Something you're interested in?
2- your expectations, are you a new shooter or looking to upgrade? Wanting to shoot 1000 yards or are we talking 300 and under?

A couple things to consider are upgradeability, bull or skinny barrel, double as a hunting rifle, adjustable trigger.....

I shoot .223 mostly, I like being the underdog. It's really because that's what I can afford to shoot ;). I started with a Remington 700 SPS tactical. Everything can and has been upgraded or replaced. Nothing needed to be replaced to target shoot.

The choices are endless.

Savage has a lot of options available in 5.56 and 7.62, make sure you try out one with an accu-stock and accu-trigger. Make sure you get a heavy barrel..

Go to http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/975588-Description-of-Target-Shooting-Sports
and click in the link in the first post. There are many different types of target shooting sports. Pick the shooting discipline that puts the biggest smile on you face then look for a rifle. Trust me, this will save you some big bucks in the long run.

By your location, you might want to look into taking one of the Ontario Rifle Association's Intro Day in Borden. You do not need a rifle to take one of the intro days and you will get to see first hand what other competitors are using.

Look at the various disciplines and their rules. Decide what sport you want to play and let us know. Then it is simple grocery list for options.

Most competitions do not let you use a set trigger so you need to clarify what you want/need.

Budget will be critical and also your ambitions in the sport.

Define target. Fclass? Informal groups at a range? Distance? Budget? Location?

For such a simple question you get a simple answer: get a savage 10,11or12, or a rem 700 trued/clone with kreiger barrel and the best optics you can afford and a harris s bipod, and jewell trigger.

Dude, check out trade ex. They have tons of really nice target rifles. I bought mine off of there and I could not be happier.

Some nice target rifle at good prices, Target Rifle (TR) shooting due to it’s military origins, restricts shooters to .308 Win (7.62 NATO) caliber or .223 Rem (5.56mm). All shooting is done prone (laying down) with the rifle supported entirely by the shooter using a sling.

A good place to start would be a Savage with a heavy barrel. This is not because they are the end all and be all but because they are like a Harley, loads of after market parts available for them. When you feel like your shooting has plateaued you can do things like upgrade and bed the stock or easily add a target grade barrel. You could get a good used Savage for under $700 and a good used scope for $200 (Bushnell 10 X) to $400 (Bushnell 4200 6-24 or 8-32)

A Remington 700 P is also a good starting point due to coming with quite a decent stock. However, the cost and complexity of truing up the action prior to upgrading the barrel makes it a more costly venture than rebarreling a Savage. (Yes, you could rebarrel without truing but it wouldn't make good sense to do so.)

Not all are 7.62 or 5.56. Mine is 6.5x55, one of the best rounds I have ever shot for target shooting. I shoot mine standing, WITHOUT a sling.

7.62xGrant, I believe what manitou210 is trying to say is that target rifle (TR) here in Canada is .308 or .223 shot prone if you want to shoot competitions at a provincial, national or internatioal level.

Hi. You need to decide what kind of target shooting you want to do. Then figure out which rifle. DCRA/ORA shooting(short range is 300 yards on CF ranges. Different disciplines within them too.) isn't the same as IPSC rifle shooting(lot of running about). You don't need or want a set trigger though. Not allowed in some competitions for one. Then you need to decide how much money you want to spend. And if you need a special permit for that rifle. An AR-15 requires an RPAL for instance.
