Target shells

More info please........

Do you just want a good target shell, shells made out of clay or a brand name "Clay Shotgun Shells" 8)

Challengers
Winchester AA's
Rem STS'
Rem Gun Club's
Fed & Win WallyWorld bulk packs

these and more are a pretty good shell for general target work and can be found almost anywhere ammo is sold.. Some are better for reloading than others.

 Clay Catridge Company shells are marketed by Joe Cantey in the Good Old South. He is one of the great clayshooters of the South. The shells are manufactures by EEI in Spain, the same that make RIO and many others. It IS the largest shotshell manufacturer with Cheddite coming in as # 2.

Basically, you pay for what you get! Except for the Federal papers, there is no NA manufacured shell that can match the QUALITY, CONSISTENCY and PRICE of a Euro shell. If one shoots skeet-in-the woods cheap is ok. FITASC type targets require exceptional performance.

Once over the pond, a true revelation is available to the descerning shotgunner.

I've been over the pond. Several times in fact and shot lots of their shells and there was nothing special about them and no great "revelations." There was nothing I shot in Europe including Rios that were appreciably better than Kent Velocity Sporting or Challenger.

FYI, the company that makes RIO is UNION ESPAÑOLA DE EXPLOSIVOS, S.A (UEE) a large company specializing in gunpowder, explosives and related products.

Secondly, Cheddite doesn't make shotgun shells. They make hulls and primers. Good ones too. Kent and Challenger both use Cheddite components.

;) Well "Big Mouth", I don't see that you shot ANY quality shells over the pond. You are probably one that shoots was is a bargain; the cheapest that is around. As previously mentioned, that is fine for skeet or skeet-in-the woods- target. For the serious competitor, a full cup wad that protects all the pellets, a slightly harder antimony based lead pellet to prevent deformation and a consistent and reliable powder charge would ensure consisten patterns and velocity! :) I have shot a large number of Euro manufactured shotshells, everything from Mary Arm (Cheditte), Nobel (Italy), Winchester (Italy), Lyavadale (a favorite), Gamebore, Borgani (another favorite), Fiocchi, B&G (another good one),Clever Mirage (Grand Italia was fantastic this year!!) among some others. I have patterned a good number of shells. In NA, the Federal paper 2 3/4 dram stuff is the best patterning shotshel in my 391 Gold Sporting or the DT10L! In Europe over the years, I could not pattern shells. But, I did shoot a number of different shells over the same Compak (5-stand) toget an idea on breaks. While subjective, on the same targets some did produce much better breaks than others. Usually the cheaper and faster shells , did not smoke the longer targets. The faster shells were more impressive at close range (less than 25 yards). The slower and better shells had better breaks at longer distances. This was confirmed using 1 Oz loads at the World FITASC this year!

There are more shells sold on opening of ducks in ANY state compared to the WHOLE year of target loads! The reverse is the truth in Europe. Also, there are many more shell assemblers than there are in NA. Therefore there is much more competiton for the target shooter market!

Henry
See you in 2006: Morocco, Italy, US and of course Canada!:)

hnachaj, I appreciate your opinions, but consider them just that, opinions. I agree with your observation that Federal paper shells work well with Berettas. I disagree that the Euro shells provide any significant advantage to those made here. I have shot the Nobel, Lyalvale and Clever shells, and found no significant advantage to them. The top line Kents are every bit as good, in my opinion. I do not understand your statements regarding shot cups and high antimony pellets - virtually all the shells available for competition have shot cups. Antimony content is related to price, and not all available pellets are of equal hardness, here or 'cross the pond. I find Kents' Diamond Shot to be as hard as any in the crush tests I have performed (tested size 7 1/2 only). It comes as no surprise to anyone who has spent time at the patterning board that slower shells pattern better than the hot rods. Your statement that more duck loads are sold than target loads comes as a surprise to me. I have a hard time believing it. Not many duck hunters shoot 10,000 rounds per year, while there are many ATA trap shooters who do just that. In any case, the comparison is ludicrous as waterfowl hunting loads bear no resemblance to target loads, being non toxic as they must be.

I like opinionated shooters, and you certainly sound like one, so I look forward to more of your entertaining posts!

Now boys ... play nice - name calling ain't allowed !

There are lots of quality shells out there ... just get the ones designed for the purpose that they were intended. Agree with Henry to a point - I too would choose Federal papers for all my clay target shooting ... but different loads for different purposes. Premium shells, premium price ... so I don't use a lot of them for casual practice or "social" shooting at the local clubs. The Federal 24 gram copper 7-1/2 International loads give great patterns in MY DT10 TOO ( but gee, mine ain't the "L" model) - these Federals are assuredly an excellent load for International Trap , and really like them for Mourning & White-winged Dove loads as well. Shot my share of Fiocchi's, Eleys & Hull Soverigns too, but wansnt overly impressed. Good shells, but "revelation" ... hardly !

FITASC target shooting is indeed a tough discipline, but I guess Henry finds "Skeet-in-the-Woods just TOO EASY for his elitist tastes ... he must have run all around the Country at some time in the past winning all the Tournaments there was to win with 100 straights ! ( funny, never heard of the guy !!! )

Individual's opinions ... Yup, they're great.. they're cheap, ( freely given, usually ) and sometimes even amount to sometihng of value, when based on experiance. Oddly enough, can't remember or seem to find anyone named "Henry" that placed in the win columns in the 2005 Canadian (Oshawa, ON) US National FITASC Championships (Le Sueur, MN.) or at the 2005 World's (Dorchester, GB)

It has been widely reported by the North American Shooting Industry that there are significantly more shotgun shells shot at Doves than any other game in the US. As to Duck Loads vs. Target loads ... can't believe that's true, especially for the for the State of Ohio or Texas, let alone the "duck rich" states like Arizona or Nevada for instance. Henry ... just where are you getting all this data ???? You work for one of the ammunition companies that are actually privy to all this stuff ???

P.S. Like Claybuster & a few others, I enjoy a good bit of on-line diatribe & wrangling too ... Now, just what was that first guy's original question ??? ... L.O.L.
