Maybe this is common sense for many of you, so I thought I would ask. I know of some place where there's and abandoned sand pit. Now, I don't think this would be crown land, but rather private property in fact. There is no actual ID from any company/owner's name, no signboard whatsoever.

Would it be reasonable, in this case, to just go ahead and setup targets and go shooting (I.e. making it clear that I would not be hunting)?

Private property means just that. You go on it without permission and you'll likely be charged with trespass(that's not a criminal charge though. Still a fat fine.). It could get worse if the pit is in a no discharge area too. Call the local municipal office and ask 'em if they can tell you who owns it, then contact 'em and ask permission.

The other consideration before any shots get fired is whether the municipality allows for discharge of firearms. Depending on the balance of rural or built-up areas, your municipality might not let your fire, regardless of what you are shooting at.

When i was around 16-17 we could go anywhere in the country where there was a sand dune and shoot. We had massive 12 gauge shoot outs in sand pits 9 or 10 friends with 4 or 5 boxes of ammo each, we would just put all kinds of crap to shoot at and had loads of fun (yeah we picked up every bit of crap we made then) Only permission we had to ask was the farmer to go shoot the crows off the dead tree in the middle of his field with our 12 gauge and he was always happy to let us. That was a blast, to see those crows turn into clouds of black feathers lol

Sigh good ol'days

Yep, except the good old days are gone forever. Too many city slickers who think firearms are evil buying country property.
