Hi , i am wondering about what caliber should i get for target shooting at 300m and more ( about 1000 feets ) . I am thinking of .270 , 308 , 30-06... which is more accurate? Suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Also looking for a good scope.

Thanks and sorry for bad english , im doing my best :D

Of the 3 you mention, .308 is the best choice.

There are dozens of cartridges and calibers for 300M target shooting starting with the .223 but if you want to shoot to win, go with 6mm BR.

Is it strictly for punching targets or is there going to be some hunting involved? Do you reload your own ammo?

If its strictly paper punching gun then a .223 with 1-8/9" twist would be your choice for being most economical and with large availablity of precision ammo. Rifles as Savage (10FP), Remington 700p (Tactical/VTR), Tikka Varmint/Tactical will work well up to 600yds with proper bullets/ammo choices.

If its going to serve as deer/bear and target gun then .308 would be by far best choice, same rifles above can be had with fast twist to handle heavier, longer, target bullets. There is plenty of choices for ammo and accurate rifles.

Scope choices will depend on your budget, and again if its going to be used for hunting or just target shooting. Simply too many choices and possiblities.

If you are new to shooting or at least rifle shooting, get yourself a fast twist .223 with the longest barrel you can find.
With the right bullet (80 gr) load and scope you can stretch it's legs to 1000 yards for paper targets.

Your English is way better than my French.;)

.223 cal, .243 cal. 6mm. 6.5mm

There are a lot of good cartridges out there and bullets to go with.

We need more info from you Maniaco, in order to give you good advice.

Will you shoot it much?

Reload for it?

Hunt with the rifle?

Shoot farther than the 300 yards?

Compete with the rifle?

The other obvious question is where in Quebec are you? There is no point kitting up for silouettes, ISSF 300m standard rifle, DCRA target rifle or DCRA F-class if you aren't close to a good range.

the one problem with the rem 700 VTR is that it doesn't have a free floating barrel
