I posted this in the optics forum but given that it pertains to precision scopes with target turrets I figure many of the guys on this part of the site might be able to help out.

I keep hearing/reading guys refer to changing the grease in the target turrets of scopes, or doing some other sort of thing to make the "clicks" more positive.

I must be missing something here 'cause I have no idea what they are referring to?

How would you change the grease, what type of grease, what do you use to change this with, how would you get the turrets out to grease it????

Is there any benefit to doing this/does it work?

I've read about it so much, I figured it's time I asked.

Some people with a vast experience in dealing / fixing / troubleshooting scopes made in Asia claim that the mushy feel of the turrets of some of those scopes can be fixed by changing the amount of grease slapped on the mechanism at manufacturing.
The variants of said technique is changing the type of grease, quantity or placement. I have never had a scope that had mushy turrets, so I cannot vouch for the effectiveness of tinkering with the aforementioned grease.

Thanks for the info. Don't get me wrong, I have no desire or need to try such a thing.....just figured I'd ask because I've seen it mentioned a few times and always wondered what people were talking about.

I don't have any fitco's or leapers so I guess I'm out of the experiment.

Tasco or Barska substitute well for the both of the aforementioned scopes

I think what you heard is in reference to the Tasco Super Sniper line of scopes. Those scopes come with way too much grease of the wrong viscosity on the o-ring that seals the turret cap to the erector assembly and when you turn the turret you can't feel it click. If you loosen the three setscrews that hold the turret cap on you can then pull off the cap and wipe the excess grease off of the o-ring and put a lighter lube in there that will do the trick and then reassemble and tighten the screw with the turret lined up where you had it, it makes a huge difference on those scopes once that is done.

I know what you mean! I had 'mushy' feeling turret
clicks in some of my scopes and hated it. I didn't
know how to get rid of it. But I did, one day I figured
it out. Easy to do too.
Stop buying Leupold!
Problem solved.
Now there is a NightForce on top of every gun I own
with the barrel longer than 6". What a difference.
(Caution; may not work for everyone)
