One question I always wondered about,

A lot of guys buy rifles exclusively for target/varmint shooting.
What type of scope is preferred for this dual-purpose? Do you go with a straight 10 power with target turrets, (ie super sniper or Bushy 10x) which seem to be favored for long range target shooting, or do you go with a variable magnification scope, which might be better for varmint hunting?

What reticle for both types of shooting, or do you swap scopes around?

I think the varaibles starting in the 4-12 range are great for dual purpose, Target/Varmint applications. Its the bottom end power that you need for closer shots. Most times I hit the hog fields I rarely touch the setting of my scope. But whenever I am shooting precision its maxed out.

I just got a Nightforce Benchrest with luminated reticale 8x to 32x with 56mm obj, this is a amazing scope, only draw back its a little heavy

It all depends on how much walking the varmint part of the equation demands. I really like Leupold's 4.5-14 40mm. The LR version w/ side focus is really nice. This scope gives you pretty good low end performance, a faitr amount of power for longer shots, and the whole thing is nice and light, as well as compact. If varmints means gophers, then I would probably look at 6.5-20, 8.5-25, or even 8-32.

Bushnell has a new 4200 scope out, 42-6245T, looks to have real target knobs, may be worth a look.

I just bought on of these (Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x50 Mildot) and so far I am liking it. I have only had it out to shoot 300M's once so far but the optics seem nice, IMO the crosshairs themselves could be a little thinner but it is toted as a Tactical Scope and not a Target scope, other than that it's great.
If your looking for a dual purpose Target/Varmint Scope then the Bushnell would definitely suit you well.
