My Swedish M/96's bolt looks like crap. Is there any safe cleaner I can use to get the tarnish off the chrome? Will regular chrome cleaner do the trick or will I ruin the bolt?

Felt wheel

Polish it with a felt wheel on a bench grinder. Use some abrasive wax stick made for ferrous metals to load the felt, then polish your bolt.
Avoid pushing strongly on the part, just skim the surface with it and watch the sound; when it changes just try to keep it constant by raising or decreasing pressure slightly.
Always keep the part moving to avoid marking. If you want a mirror polish, finish the piece with a muslin wheel. Wear goggles and short sleeves.
Good luck.

hi
are you sure the bolt is chromed? they usually were polished steel. Is there any pitting or just darker spots that are tarnished?
Any dark spots should polish out with a dremel and a wire wheel and some "never dull"
You could also get the bolt "Engine turned", usually called jeweling.

tarnished bolt 96

I have a swede with this problem mod 96 as well, BUT the rifle shoot really well. I still have this rifle, one of approx 16 swedes. There's not much you can do with this problem ( if it's similar to mine dark metal ) I wouldn't give it a second thought. They're great rifles and if it has a good bore as most do, take you're baby out to the range and practice . Enjoy you're SWEDE, Bill.

Hmm, it is not dark metal, it looks like crud spots that do not come off with Hoppes...kind of like someone sneezed on the bolt and the goober dried leaving a ugly circle...

Not too sure about using power tools on this, my feminine side is obviously showing here :(

No pitting, just crap looking. I will try and take some photos tonight and post.

PP, what is this wax you are telling me about?

This is a great rifle, only because it is my _only_ rifle (other than a singleshot .22!) :( The rifling is worn (but visible, thank god), the crown is shot and the wood is missing about 4 inches :)eek: damn you bubba!) but when I take my time with my reloads I can get 4 out of 5 rounds touching at 75m.

Take a flat bladed screwdriver and try to scrape the spot lightly. It if crumbles into an orange powder, it's actualy a rust scab. If so, scrape it all off and you'll be left with a dark grey stains with a tiny bit of micro-crazing in the metal. You might get the color back with some CLR and steel wool, but an easier solution is to use a dremel felt and a little jeweller's rouge. go slow and it should come up nice without any flat spots.

get the color back with some CLR and steel wool,

CLR, really???

Here is a picture:

There is a reflection in the centre, most of the crap is around the crown stamp.

It actually looks like rust! Or rust pitting.

I soaked it in Hoppes for an hour and rubbed and nothing came off, so I wonder if the previous owner (that did that pesky grind job to the bolt, not me!) perhaps had rust on it at some point???

I just finished cleaning the bolt with Hoppes Elite and Hoppes #9 and nothing came off, and nothing was orange on any cloth. I don't think it is rust, it looks like some sort of milky pitting.

I will try the felt+dremel on the weekend.

After using Hoppes Elite, are you supposed to use something else or can you dry it off and put it away?

You can dry it off and put away, but I'd give it a film of oil first.

That pic looks like an old rust patch that someone acid dipped - possibly even an arsenal fix. Dunno. You won't loose that without moving up to abrasives and polishing it out.
