For $50 I thought this might be something worth exploring (just as a novelty until I can afford a good redfield scope). What is the consensus from others? Will it break after the first 10 rds? Is there a better alternative for a reasonable price?

Thanks

What i've read says the M14 is very tough on scopes in general. 10 rounds might be pessimistic but maybe not by a lot.

Edit: I got a 10x40 Bushnell for $200 after rebate. I consider that budget/reasonable. Has stood up well so far.

It says in the product description that it is designed for .22 to shotguns with 3'' shells so it must be able to handle the recoil no (??)

Regarding optics. . .I will have about $500 to spend. . .just not sure what I really want. . .a more tactical scope (1-4X) or something more long range (3-9X). I plan on doing mostly hunting with the gun. . .but I also would like to do some long range plinking. Thinking maybe vortex or Redfield.

You really need to figure out what sort of optic best suits your needs before you spend the money. $500 gives you lots of options for medium-grade optics in either the tactical or hunting styles.

I've got a Bushnell 6500 1.25-8x32 on my M14 and it's a good all-around scope, though the reticle is just a simple duplex.

You also need to figure out what mount you're going to go with. Buy a quality mount, whichever style you decide on.

I dunno, for 50$ it probably is better worth spending an extra few bucks and getting at least a Vortex SPARC or something like that...

If you do buy the tasco make sure it's the ProPoint 2 version. Not sure if they still sell them but I though I saw some at Epps or maybe Bass Pro. The PP2 was a lot more durable, in fact it was the most durable tube dot optic I ran. Back when we ran tubes on our Open pistols the PP2 broke a lot less than the PP3, PP4 an the aimpoints. I still have 3 that work in a drawer somewhere and use them from time to time if I need a temp optic. I have a ProPoint (first model with side battery tube) on my Mossberg 590 and its been on there since the late 80's and still works perfect. And that gun has seen thousands of rounds of mixed target loads, slugs, sabot slugs (2 3/4" and 3") and 2 3/4"-3" OOO Buck. In general rifles and shotguns are not nearly as destructive of red dot tube scopes (except maybe the bigger magnums, but I've never seen a dot mounted on those) as an IPSC open gun.

Thanks for the replies.

Stevo--I went with an m14 aluminum mount. I am hoping it is decent. If I had another $100 I might have gone for the steel version, but the price was a bit too steep. I agree that a cheap mount is pretty much useless--nothing worse that a scope that won't stay on target because you need a new mount. That Bushnell you mention seems like it might fit my needs of an optic somewhere in the middle, but it's a bit pricey at +$600.

Jsutin/Papa--thanks for the opinions and alternatives. I may look at the PP2 or the Vortex.

You might be able to find that scope for a lot less. Since it's been discontinued I've seen them on sale as low as $370, that's what I got mine for.

As far as lower-cost red dot sights go, also consider the Bushnell TRS-25. I've used them extensively on VZs without issue, though I've never used them on an M14.

Just looked at the Bushnell TRS 25 for $90. . .and also checked out the Vortex red dot for $189. The Sparc Red dot vortex is definitely nicer at twice the price and I was willing to buy it, but the store didn't have any in stock except the display model. Think I might go back and get the bushnell for $90. Unless someone can recommend a place where I can get the vortex in the lower mainland (??)

After some consideration and handling of scopes etc., I really like the red dot 1X and the ability to shoot with both eyes open and acquire targets very fast. . .it will give me great accuracy at 5yds to 100yds in a split second. . .great for basic deer hunting and also for tactical applications. Pretty sure a higher powered scope is not in my future anymore. . .at least not for now.

it'll last more than 10 rds but expect it to to get shot loose within the first 100-200 rds. waste of money unless you really need the red dot right away, imo.

I have a Sparc and TRS-25s. I prefer the Bushnells.

My M-14 rattled apart a far more expensive scope, but luckily I had a good warranty. I have one of those tasco's you are describing on my sons BB gun and I don't think it is going to last. I think it would be a complete waste of $50 bucks. If you want a cheapy red dot get something with a lifetime warranty so when it does break you can get it replaced.

Stevo. . .interesting I actually thought I liked the Bushnell a bit better too when I looked at both of them. Bushnell is a fair bit wider. . .I wonder if it is as good though as the Vortex--in terms of being fog proof etc. I just figured with the Vortex they have an excellent warranty and I wanted something that will last.

You think the Bushnell TRS is better eh?

The Sparc has more features like the NV capability and the screw-in magnifier but those are no added benefit to me. If I need NV, I'll use an Aimpoint. It's physically wider and with a smaller field of view than the Bushnell. I've not had fogging issues with the Bushnell but I know a couple guys who have. I've also read plenty of reports here of guys having issues with their Sparcs. Vortex has a great warranty because they have to.

Is the Bushnell better? I believe it's a better value and mine have not let me down.

Where is the Bushnell TRS-25 for $90? That's a good price as far as I know.

I've seen a lot of positive comments about the TSR-25 so I ordered one myself, but I paid more than $90 for it. :(

Thought it was $90 but she must have had price wrong. I went back and when they rang it through the till it was $139 :( Oh well. . .I guess it's still a decent price compared to other red dots.

At least I didn't get hosed. :)

With the reviews I've read, it's a tough little bastard that can hang with the big boys other than the battery life, which is still better than most red dots under $250. 300 hours battery life.

My vote would definitely go to the Bushnell TRS25. I have one on my M14 shorty and can take headshots on a target all day long with it. It also has decent battery life. Tasco is the Chinese word for "junk".
