I am looking at building a budget .223 scope rifle for range use, probably a Stevens 200. Iam looking at the Tasco Varminter 6-24 x 42 as the scope for this rig. It seems to be a good deal at 100$ for the high magnification you get. Is it a reasonably alright scope? I dont want to spend like 500 bucks , so this seems to fit the bill as a long range scope at a good price.

I have one of these on my Stevens .223. Mine seems to work reasonably well, but I've only shot out to 330 yards or so. The windage/elevation adjustments are accurate. Glass not bad brightness wise.

It does have poor eye relief when you turn it up. I had it on my 308 for a couple sessions, and it was a little close for comfort(although my bench is low, so it might exaggerate the closeness to the eye).

I find that, while you can turn it up to 24x, its not good to 24x. Keep it to 18x max and good to go. Adjustable objective is good.

The thing I hate about this scope is the scope power for ranging with mil-dots. It does it on 8x, where it would be nice if it was on max power...

My 223 is hibernating for a bit, I put this scope on my 22. Mil-dots are ducky for hold over between 100-150m.

I own 3 - 6-24 Tasco scopes and use them on .223 and .22 rifles. Great for reaching those stubborn varmints that tend to bob up and down in the distance. I usually shoot between 100 and 150 with the .22 but have reached 200 comfortably. 3x9x are not enough. the .223 has reached 300 but would rather be sure of a quick termination. So I shoot what is comfortable for me.

My father had a Tasco on a Rem 700, 22-250, and it was decent enough, for the money.

It doesn't have thousand dollar optics, but it ain't a thousand dollar scope, either.

Same as saskgunowner said. At the upper reaches of magnification, it became a lot more apparent that it was not a high-buck scope.

I'd buy one, if I were to run across one while I needed it.

I have one and found that it wasnt good at the higher magnification settings. But it will do the job until you can get something better. I would have a look at the bushnell dusk to dawn scopes too. I think they are alot better and dont cost much more. Maybe an extra 30 bucks.

Tasco Varmint 6-24X is a great scope for the price. Any magnification above 20X is not too sharp. For what it offers you shouldn’t have any problem see ground hogs up to 300 yards.

I have one that I use for load development and it can handle big guns up to 45/70 without any issue. I believe it carrys a life time warranty. That $100 investment will last you many years.

They work on light recoiling rifles. The main problem is that after a year or 2 the continued adjustment of the objective lens causes wear and degrades accuracy. Send them back with $10.00 and get a new one.

I've tried them on my M'96 in 6.5x55 and briefly on my P17 in 30-06. I found they were very good for the price, and I had no problems with them, other than what the other fellows noted - not that much eye relief on 20x-24x as well as a little less clear on those settings as well. I mostly used them on 8x-16x anyways, though, so it affects me little.

Alright, thanks for your help. The tasco looks like a pretty good deal.

Wild1,
I went on the SIR website and the Bushnell Banner Dusk and Dawn scopes seem good for the price. The 6-18 x 50 would be exactly what I need. I may spend an extra 50$ to get the Bushnell, since 18 power is about the most I could get out of the Tasco anyway.

a guy in our club last fall had the 6 to 24 varminter on a 300 win mag .he said he had no troubles with it ...
