I've owned Para and Colt 1911s and am now itching for a new one. Taurus is definately meant for a man on a budget. I thought about buying one from that new Canadian company CastleArms.org.

Any opinions out there? Are these cheap junk or as good as Taurus advertises?

By most accounts Taurus did a good job with their 1911's. Like Max says, if there is an issue a fix is only a spare part away. I'd check & compare what mods you are getting on a given model vs other makers for similar extras at a similar cost.

Don't waste your money on china product. I bought my SS Taurus 1911 for $750 and it is as nice as any of my other 1911's. It has a forged frame vs. cast and a lot of upgrades compared to the cost for my STI, Para, Colts and Coonan's. At a least $600 less.

As for the MIM, it doesn't bother me as other companies use as much.

I've heard nothing but praise for the Taurus 1911s...

but I've heard nothing but praise for the S.T.I. Spartan as well.

And I know which one I'd choose. ;)

I had my PT1911 SS since April :) there is a review I did floating around here...

The gun has a forged frame, slide and barrel...reliable.. nice trigger...

IMO it's a great choice for a mid range 1911! The only thing I repaced was the grips. This and my Beretta are two of my favourite guns (my sig pic show it ;) )

I'd take a chance...

I like them, and I like the advertising for them. But you can claim anything in an ad. I had an opportunity to handle their version of the 1911 at the 2008 SHOT SHOW in Las Vegas. They seem nice. The slide to frame fit wasn't what I thought it should have been, and the trigger was a little gritty.
At least their products are not Chi-com reverse engineered junk, made with junk re-cycled steel.
For my money, I would buy the Taurus 1911 over that Chi-com crap. The Chi-coms will sell the West whatever the suckers will buy so they can get/buy an aircraft carrier. Buy that Chi-com junk at your/our peril.

One thing to be aware of, there is a Taurus 1911 with a rail on the dust cover, some (many) 1911 rail holsters do not fit this model - no big deal if you know about it, very big deal if you planned on slipping it into a holster that's 'off the shelf'

I have a Kimber Warrior (it has a rail) and I got a factory holster for it. Think its a High Noon paddle holster.

They are tough to find but they are out there. Plus I would think that the plastic stuff should be catching up by now.
