Hello every one
I’m about to pull the trigger so to speak on an unrestricted .223 semi auto rifle. Caveats are unrestricted classification and compact size. So far the IWI Tavor is the front runner. However I’m quite unsure on optics due to the lack of available info. I was wishing to use a Schmidt & Bender short dot but have not been able to ascertain if this optic has a base available to mate to the Tavor. If someone could point me in the right direction or post pictures of such a set up I would greatly appreciate it. The plan is to also mount N.V. unit such as a N.V.S. 14 as well, so the mount for the scope would need to be compatible.

Thank you & best regards

A few guys have modified a rail to fit on the Tavor.
Canada Ammo is bringing an IWI rail to be fitted on a Tavor. However, the ETA will likely be the same time as the new firing pin/bolt ETA. I talked to Canada Ammo a week ago. They are hoping it will be available in Nov but this is not confirmed. No paper work has arrived from IWI yet.
So it is sit and wait.

Would the previous post suggest sarcasm on the availability of a proper mounting system for the Tavor or a frustration on receiving what is actually/potentially globally available? My concern lies in if I’m better off to wait for the Tavor optics mounting “teething issues” to subside and focus my money & efforts on other interests. I know little about this firearm other then what I have read and find the optics issues to be the theoretical Achilles heel. Please enlighten me :)

I own a Tavor and dont regret putting out the money for it. I admit to not being happy with the optics but a $15.00 knockoff AR riser and about an hour of my time and so far I have had an eotech,Acog and an Elcan mounted on the rifle with no issues. Having a great time with it now:D

Cheers

Hello Jeff
Thank you for posting. Which of those have you found to be the best match for the rifle. Would a S&B short dot be a poor choice compared to a high field of view red dot site?

Thanks

I cant speak for the shortdot having never used one but out of the three optics I have tried I like the Elcan for its 3.4 power and its large diameter glass. The Acog does look a lot cooler though.:D

Cheers

I think so. I am getting the same type of accuracy that I used too get out of my ARs. If you take a look at the stickied Tavor thread someone posted pics of the targets they have shot. As mentioned by others many times in the past it is a battle rifle so one should expect battle rifle accuracy. But hope for more.:)

Cheers

Have you consdered the Elcan SpecterDr? It's getting good reviews and has a BDC reticle. Cheaper than the S&B too.

With the MEPRO sight on Tavor, you can get a 6" to 8" group at 100 yards. The dot is about 6 MOA at 100 yards. However, I want a much tighter group so I will be changing the MEPRO once the IWI rail is here.
I do not know about S&B as I have not used one before. I am looking at Leupold VII 1-4X. From what I have read it is cheap and tough enough to handle the recoil.
I recalled someone has mounted a NF compact on the Tavor and he was happy about the setup. I am not sure which magnification or reticle was used.

The Elcan seems to be a good match with the Tavor. I'd love to see a specterDR. Elcan glass was good, the reticle was good and it matched the Tavor pretty well. Of course the issue is which one to get? 1) Elcan SpecterDr? 2) S&B (if you can afford it :() 3) NF 1-4x Again cost, or 4) Trijicon. The trijicon's I've looked through also had excellent glass. Some tough choices. Then there's the Leupold and a few other high end options.

I'm just looking ahead for when Can Am offers a less expensive Tavor with a rail and no optics. ;)

I'll probably have to get one at that point.

How easy is it to switch a barrel with the Tavor?

Once you have made a barrel wrench yourself, removing and installing is a joke. Just make sure the little cotter pin from the front swivel don't fly across the room.

Yes....it seems like a poor idea to bundle the Mepro sight with the rifle. Must be out of Canadian Ammo’s control. Good to hear about the accuracy and thank you Demodude for pointing me to the ‘Sticky’. I usually like to buy my optics prior to the rifle, however in this case I believe I will have to purchase the rifle first and learn with other CGN members what works best through good old trial and error.

Sounds good. Now we just need some aftermarket match grade barrels :). A varmint/target one would also be nice ;)
I'm guessing Can Ammo isn't having any problems selling these things. That being said this rifle has the potential to slay the competition. Non restricted, ability to switch optics like an AR, better ergonomics, bullpup and it looks like you can change it fairly easily from a varminter/target to a service rifle. Well not much is stopping it. Other than options and price right now.

As I have said, our contract with IWI includes the M21 sight. FWIW the rails costs us roughly the same as the M21, so the cost will remain the same. We are trying to get no sight or rail, and have a rail made in China. Maybe for 09, we'll see.

Good to hear....thank you for posting. I will wait for the non-mepro option. Is it safe to say a scope such as a S&B short dot would clear the factory open sights with the IWI scope rail?
